This is because "GitHub Pages created after June 15, 2016 and using
github.io domains are served over HTTPS." and an LMS that I tried had

So - was that an issue with old LMS (it was a 7.7 build) or is it a more
general problem that could happen with more modern installations

I was wondering about what you said about ntp. piCorePlayer does do a
ntp to set the time on boot. During development we sync changed files,
so if the time isn't set correctly we would know fairly quickly.
