I see only the S_JIS characters but I don't know if you tried UTF-8
where "??" is? How did you set your encoding to S_JIS instead of
ISO2022-JP? If you can do this, why not UTF-8?

I guess the problem is, that PM is script-aware, but not Unicode based
My guess would be, that the next version hopefully will change that ;-)

They are UTF8:

When I insert them using Character Pallet, they are not even displayed

Hiro,
PM is using the most convenient encoding. So if the sender used UTF-8
and the message contains characters which can be displayed only using
Unicode, PM will use Unicode in your reply. If you send a message using
only ascii characters, PM will use the smallest possible encoding for that.

I can't, since I can't make the message into UTF-8 to start with. How
do I specify the message as UTF-8?
I receive emails from AppleMail user whose encoding is UTF-8 a

Ur,
How do you set encoding of the outgoing message?
I need to use UTF-8 characters. Mail > Encoding is grayed out. I set
default to UTF-8 in the PM Pref, but it was sent as ISO-8859-1 instead.
Actually, the pref window sez (Whenever possible, PM will use US-ASCII).
How do you defeat this?
