If you don't want to use Thunderbird, pay for Outlook/Exchange, or a superior browser-based front end to a paid hosted service like Fastmail, then ... um ... er ... I think you're probably out of luck, on Windows at least. Standalone email clients seem to be a thing of the past as everyone either

My life is built around Outlook but my wife uses Windows Live Mail which seems to do most of the things you want. It is a free download for Win 7, designed to operate with it. It is as simple as most of the ones I have seen and definitely easier to use than Gmail or Outlook.com (nee Hotmail).
