The only absolute way I know is to see what runtime file is in use. Normally
I display the VERSION()
of VFP on my about dialog for this reason. Short
there was a
setting somewhere or a value in one of the project files I could look
at, but it appears that might not be the case.

Ah now I understand. Put it in the EXE! I was looking at the
development environment. Unfortunately that info wasn't placed in the
help screen in the applications - but they will be going forward.

If I remember correctly, wasn't the format of the .scx files modified in
VFP8 and/or vfp9 to include extra metadata? You could check for the presence
of these fields in the .scx files. Maybe a trip over to the Wiki may help.

recall which field it is, but it should be pretty easy to find.
