[libreoffice-projects] Askbot for LibreOffice in your language
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Hi Community (cross-posting on purpose) We are in position to deploy AskBot for LibreOffice (AB4LO) in many languages. Those individuals interested to moderate the Askbot for LibreOffice in his own language are invited to step forward. (We will not deploy an AB4LO instance without at least one moderator.) My experience as moderator for AB4LO in pt-BR is less than 5 minutes /day, and the rate of new questions is about 2 new question/days and 2 new answers/day. Your mileage may vary, depending on how active is your national/language community. As example, you can check the pt-BR site at http://ask.libreoffice.org/pt-br/questions/ Note: I had to complete the translation of the AB4LO web interface myself. I had to get a login in transifex and finish the job. Other languages are in incomplete state too. The list of available languages is at this link: https://www.transifex.com/projects/p/askbot/ You may coordinate with your translator to get it completed. Why AskBot ? * There were several demands to deploy means of community intercommunication other than mailing list. * To get help thru mailing list, the process is to subscribe/confirm subscription/write mail to ask/wait response/get flood of unwanted other messages/unsubscribe/confirm unsubscription. This is too much 1990'ish. * AB4LO allows you to quickly ask for help, and get responses from your community. Unlike forums, AB4LO is aimed to establish a knowledge base on LibreOffice in your language and provides tools to search for a given subject quickly. * AB4LO is not suited to debates and discussions. Prefer the mailing lists for that purpose. * Askbot also allows you to login thru your OpenId credentials, such as Facebook, Google, Twitter, etc... Chances are that your users will use it frequently. * You also don't get e-mails unless you ask for in your profile. *My experience with AB4LO in pt-BR* As I said, I get 5 minute work as moderator. Most of the job is to edit the question and put in a format of a question seeking answers. I also narrow the tags for a better search. Sometimes people put Basic code in the details and I care to have it well rendered with the internal AB4LO editor tool. I had to close some questions on subjects unrelated to LibreOffice. Almost no spam so far. Some answers had to be demoted to comment and some comments had to be promoted to answer. The kind of questions asked has a good indication on the difficulties users have with LO and tells a lot about the user and the community. As moderator, you are not obliged to answers users questions. We strongly advertize Askbot for LibreOffice in many of our local communications. So, what are you waiting for? Get AB4LO now!!! Re: [libreoffice-projects] Workflow between dev, UX and l10n teams
Hi Sophie, OK for me to work on master translation. On 19/01/2015 08:03, Sophie wrote: To conclude, what l10n team would like to see is: - a review process of the strings before they are committed and make sure they respect the en_US standards (capitals, grammar, punctuation, typography). That will require a revisor with en_US skills. - if there is a way to script changes, script them otherwise wait until there is a script available to commit them - any time there are heavy changes that pop up in someone's mind (like changing ... for …) discuss it with the l10n team before committing those changes. Right. The issue is raised (IMHO) because a great deal of developers are not english native speakers, as well as their focus is no C++ language rather than English. The thing is: if we can catch the modification upfront, it will make it easy for all of us. If I may also suggest, I'll ask all developers and within ESC recurrent revision, to check/review/flag for any major issues with respect to l10n. This can be implemented as One: create a meta-bug about l10n en_US string revision. Two: then on each commit that involves some form of l10n activity, the developer should open a new bug with his commit number/reference and link to the l10n meta-bug. The subject line should be L10n revision requested. Three: the same developer, if implementing or modifying a feature, should also open a similar bug with subject [LOCALHELP] feature XYZ changed/created; help page missing and link to bug 80430. Note that we don't ask to the developers to fix english mistakes nor write help pages, tasks that we can offload from them provided we get noticed. Fixing English mistakes/linguistics and writting help pages is a task the community can do continuously. [libreoffice-projects] Getting Started Guide 6.0 released
LibreOffice's Documentation Team releases the Getting Started Guide 6.0, the introductory text for all LibreOffice applications and more. Covering spreadsheets, presentations, texts, drawings, databases and the equations editor, as well as other important concepts in LibreOffice, the guide updates the previous book for LibreOffice 5.2 with the features implemented up to the 6.0 release. As it's an introductory text, some advanced topics were left out, and are to be addressed in the other specialized modules guides, such as the Writer Guide 6.0. This turns the Getting Started Guide into a light reading on all of LibreOffice's most important features and concepts. "We are pleased to announce the release the new Getting Started Guide 6.0, bringing the contents closer to the latest version of the software. With this effort we also want to improve the documentation development process, and deliver the next update in much shorter time frame" said Dave Barton, member of the Documentation team. "We will begin the Getting Started 6.1 Guide project shortly" he added. "The Guides update has been a very long process and revealed issues especially with revision, which is a very time consuming task and hard to carry out. A delicate balance is necessary between contribution and revision. We would like to try a time-based release of the next guide" said Olivier Hallot, Documentation Team Coordinator. "We will announce new methods and tools to speed up the authoring and release of the Guides", he added. The Guide was assembled using the techniques of the LibreOffice master document, a container of linked individual chapters, allowing the update of the chapters to be carried out automatically for the final document. The master document was then the source for exporting the Guide in PDF, EPUB and ODT formats for download. The Getting Started Guide 6.0 is available for download in the documentation website at https://documentation.libreoffice.org/en/english-documentation/getting-started-guide/ and the individual chapters and master document are in the TDF wiki at https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/Publications#Getting_Started_with_LibreOffice . LibreOffice 6.0's Getting Started Guide is also available as a printed book from Lulu, by Friends of Open Document Inc., an Australia-based volunteer organization with members around the world, which will be using profits from the sale to benefit the LibreOffice community. -- Olivier Hallot LibreOffice Documentation Coordinator Comunidade LibreOffice Rio de Janeiro - Brasil - Local Time: UTC-03:00 http://tdf.io/joinus -- To unsubscribe e-mail to: projects+unsubscr...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? https://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: https://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/projects/ Privacy Policy: https://www.documentfoundation.org/privacy

[libreoffice-projects] TDF has been accepted as Google Seasons of Doc mentoring organization.
Hello Team We are happy to inform that the Foundation has been accepted as organization for the Google Seasons of Docs The next deadline in the process is May 28th, were we must find interested technical writers to discuss our ideas. I have listed some of our ideas in the following wiki page https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/GSoDOC/2019 and you will recognize our permanent challenges, which is no reason to prevent you from adding your own ideas. I expect that, given the very wide scope of LibreOffice application areas, we will have interested technical writers to join the program under TDF mentoring. We also have to nominate ourself for mentoring our technical writers. Please forward you name if you are interested in the job. Kind regards. -- Olivier Hallot LibreOffice Documentation Coordinator Comunidade LibreOffice Rio de Janeiro - Brasil - Local Time: UTC-03:00 http://tdf.io/joinus -- To unsubscribe e-mail to: projects+unsubscr...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? https://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: https://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/projects/ Privacy Policy: https://www.documentfoundation.org/privacy

[libreoffice-projects] Meeting Minutes - Documentation - April 23rd, 2020
Thursday April 23rd 2020, 18:00 UTC Presents: Pulkit Krishna (12:00 UTC part, IRC), Olivier, Steve Fanning, Toni Blackwelder, Randolph Gamo, Dan Lewis, Leo Moons, Emiliano Vavassori IRC chanel: https://irc.documentfoundation.org/?settings=#libreoffice-doc Telegram Group https://t.me/joinchat/ALeRuUFCxyZY0wzoddldWQ TDF Jitsi Room https://jitsi.documentfoundation.org/tdfdocteam Topics and Discussion: SF: (1) Would like to discuss the proposed revision to Appendix A of the Calc Guide (Keyboard Shortcuts) - see my message to the mailing list on 13th April. + Added a 3rd column for Mac + review shortcuts from Customization UI. + Contents became dense (Olivier) + Suggest a section on Windows/Unix (same kbd) and another for Mac, all in same appendix A. + Is it going to increase size? (Leo) + just 10 pages (SF) -> Go for 2 sections (all) (2) Would like to confirm that the team is happy to drop Appendix B (Description of Functions) from the next issue of the Calc Guide. -> Delete the chapter, all information is in Help and is accurate. (3) Would like to discuss whether a usable alphabetical index would be benficial in the Calc Guide. + Index is useful (sf) + Jean Weber has concerns on quality of the selected words. + concordance file? - list of words, not very selective (oh, sf) + already tried in Calc, need rework/cleanup (sf) -> Add it if good enough, otherwise just don't add it. (all) (4) Discuss whether to produce a 6.4 Calc Guide or target 7.0. (I have analysed the Calc changes listed in the 6.3 and 6.4 release notes and can brief the meeting). Consider approach of regular small updates rather than big bang approach? Pro 7.0 + release at time of software, good for community/user + magnify release announcement impact Pro 6.4 + few addition, manageable + target end of May (sf) but depends on revision (sf) + I can help in revision of calc (Leo Moons) -> Keep 6.4 release and prepare for 7.0 PK: (1)When will Dan and Drew complete their review of the chapter 7 and 9 of the base Guide Respectively? + More work is needed to complete and review, things have changed in the contents and needs rework (Dan Lewis) + issues in mail merge, new screenshots. + Question on tables with no keys, how to have it managed in the UI (Dan) + Use SQL to achieve that. (2)Which version should we use for rewriting the base guide? + 4 or 5 items that requires the change. + Keep 6.4 and if ready, ok otherwise bump to 7.0. (3)I have an idea in my mind ever since I joined the docs team. I know that it is hard to release the documentation of a partcular version along with it. I think a better idea would be to release the documentation when the version becomes stable. It will give more tome to the volunteers. The website team can add a line near the download button for stable version that this version has got documentation. Technology enthusiast, early adopter or power user can do without documentation I think. + topic not discussed -> next meeting Misc: + Find and replace : diff between format and attribute (Toni) + confusing UI "attribute" vs "Format" (tb) + Seems 'Attribute' is for S of character formats, while 'Format' is for paragraph formats. (olivier) + Help does no Help, will play around on the issue & communicate to mailing list (tb) + worth review the UI terminology to make it more intuitive (olivier) Next meeting : *THURSDAY* May 7th 2020 at 18:00 UTC. -- Olivier Hallot LibreOffice Documentation Coordinator Comunidade LibreOffice Rio de Janeiro - Brasil - Local Time: UTC-03:00 http://tdf.io/joinus -- To unsubscribe e-mail to: projects+unsubscr...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? https://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: https://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/projects/ Privacy Policy: https://www.documentfoundation.org/privacy

I've made some tests using MateCAT to help us translating...that will save us a lot of time. But I noticed that MateCAT asks private info like your contacts when register to work with MateCAT. Some users do not want to register when this kind of info is asked. Is it possible to have our own installation of MateCAT hosted on TDF servers?. Hope that the registration will be easier for the users and respect their privacy. I'm sure that more translators would like to use this fantastic Open Source tool.
