Ah, I've reread Steve's message and, indeed, he specifically says that he makes
the selection while VoiceOver is off. Yes, sounds like it could very well be
QuickNav in his case.

If what Steve is saying is accurate, it wouldn't be QuickNav because QuickNav
is persistent through VoiceOver relaunches. In other words, if you turned off
VoiceOver while QuickNav is enabled, it'll still be enabled when you turn
VoiceOver back on.

Shure. He wrote that he turns off VO to make the selection and after taht he
turns VO on again.

That sounds unusual. Not sure why that would be the case. Next time you can't
make a selection, assuming the other things I mentioned are sorted, try using
Control p or semicolon to create/move the insertion cursor and see what happens.
