Re: Woman jailed for refusing to vote
I saw the report on telly, and am with the lady in principle. However, there is little else to be achieved that way but the publicity she managed so well. Personally, when faced with an enforced choice between two minutes in a polling booth and a day in chokey (with strip search, etc, etc), I'd go for the informal vote every time. I haven't even got the guts to speed up when I see a Multanova camera. Re: Woman jailed for refusing to vote
Australia is a democracy but unfortunately the majority of people in this democracy do not have the courage of their convictions to stand up to the bully boys of Australian politics and tell them where to stick their compulsory ballots. They are such cowards that they will not even dare to take action against the AEC and politicians that they could never be caught for. If you don't support the AEC turn up to the next election wearing a t-shirt reading "AEC = NAZI" and hang around the electoral station tearing up ballot papers because "you made a mistake in expressing your preferences" and you would like another one (legally you are allowed to do this ad infinitum). If you really want to embarass an ALP supporter of compulsory voting ask them about their priorities in citizen's responsibities: why is it compulsory to vote when it isn't compulsory to innoculate your children against contagious dieseases? So just because you are a coward there is no need to give support to the enemy. Mark Holsworth Brian Jenkins wrote: I saw the report on telly, and am with the lady in principle. I think this may be something of an over-reaction. In any case, the article (or person?) was incorrect in stating that it's compulsory to vote. It's not - but it is compulsory to either show up or request a ballot paper to be posted to you. You can write anything you like on that ballot paper, or nothing at all. If you really want to embarass an ALP supporter of compulsory voting ask them about their priorities in citizen's responsibities: why is it compulsory to vote when it isn't compulsory to innoculate your children against contagious dieseases? Why just an ALP supporter of compulsory voting? Why not a Liberal, National, Democrat etc supporter? Alister This is the Neither public email list, open for the public and general discussion. Yep, just write "none of these" and spend the time destroying the dictatorship, not in the dictatorships jails. -Original Message- From: Brian Jenkins [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: alister air [EMAIL PROTECTED]; [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED]; [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Friday, 21 May 1999 2:20 PM Subject: Re: Woman jailed for refusing to vote I saw the report on telly, and am with the lady in principle.
