Re: [Publicpolicy] Trump

2016-12-01 Thread Owen Blacker
I'm with Gerv on this. *I* endorse the idea, but the WMF should absolutely
take no stance on the politics of any nation-state other than on specific
topics.

If Trump says something stupid about one of our policy areas we should
criticise him for it; if he says something sensible about one of them, we
should welcome it. But the WMF totally shouldn't intervene in political
campaigns in the more sense, even if the IRS code didn't forbid it.

2016-12-01 Thread Kirill Lokshin
So, basically, do something that directly violates federal law?

"Under the Internal Revenue Code, all section 501(c)(3) organizations are
absolutely prohibited from directly or indirectly participating in, or
intervening in, any political campaign on behalf of (or in opposition to)
any candidate for elective public office. Contributions to political
campaign funds or public statements of position (verbal or written) made on
behalf of the organization in favor of or in opposition to any candidate
for public office clearly violate the prohibition against political
campaign activity." [1]

No, we shouldn't do that.

Kirill

Er, what? In what universe would it be a good idea for the Wikimedia
Foundation to get involved in American electoral politics in any way,
let alone that way?

I speak only as a resident of Northern California, and a student of
American politics.

Regardless of the concern, I suggest urgency. Trump will be quite
favorable to corporate interests broadly, and unless a given issue can wait
2-4 years, the window for modest liberal consideration closes upon his
inauguration. We tend to respond quickly to charismatic leaders in this
country.

However, if you want to reach Mr. Trump, I suppose talking to libertarian
or paleoconservative influencers might be useful.

Hi John,

I have been trying to wrap my head around this as well. From a European
perspective I expect the US trade policy to drastically change, so that's
one thing. TTIP seems highly unlikely now.

Weren't the republicans somewhat moreopen to copyright changes in general?
Anyhow, I am in DC for OpenCon and would be greet to perhaps meet-up and
