Can't a system daemon use some authentication method (like a remote
pulseaudio daemon authenticating remote requests) to authenticate and
authorize local audio usage requests? That would simplify permissions
problems, when PA starts and even allow multiple access for multiple

It's the recommended way as it allows things like user switching to work
as expected (e.g. when I login as a second user, the first user's sound
is effective

gnome 2.20.3 and pulseaudio 0.9.9...

First off thanks for the reply. I looked at the file that is being used and
it is definitely < 1 mb. The file is also getting cached in PulseAudio
Manager and I can play it from there. I attempted to change the logout
sound to a sound that works for one of my other events and still no dice.
