 was there a regression since 3.4.x? I'm using 3.6.6 (commit d0295a91b6) and try as I might can't override build-in facts via custom. I can override via commandline:

 FACTER_os="some string" facter os

  but any value of 'has_weight' (or omitted) yields no updates

 separator = { 'file' => File::SEPARATOR, 'path' => File::PATH_SEPARATOR }

 combined = Facter.value(:os).merge({ 'separator' => separator })

 Facter.add(:os) do

   has_weight(99)

   setcode do

 combined

   end

 end

  I'm expecting to see but alas the 'separator' block never comes thru.

 I was referring to that author tag. My idea was that if we are going to waste a few lines with that detail, let's use the tag. Since the PDF templates don't contain this it does seem to be going away so I agree that it's not helpful. I never loved that part of the template.

Jira (PUP-8413) Show refresh commands that the service provider would issue during "noop" run

  Re: Show refresh commands that the service provider would issue during "noop" run

 Yup, we would have to start generating events in order to trigger actions like service refresh. Looks like the event manager might even queue "noop" events in these cases: https://github.com/puppetlabs/puppet/blob/5.4.0/lib/puppet/transaction/event_manager.rb#L161-L166 The issue is that these downstream events don't trigger any refresh action on providers where details could be logged. We could do this, but we'd have to figure out a way to ensure that 3rd-party providers don't suddenly start taking action when a noop event is delivered because such an event has never come in before. This might have to be an opt-in behavior where the events are only delivered to providers that advertise support for a noop_referesh feature.

 I would like to be able to use a different external node classifier based on environments, so I can test changes and then merge to the production branch.   It looks like a few tickets have been submitted about this: PUP-4521 - Pass agent-requested environment to external node classifiers PUP-4522 - Provide Facts for a classifier to select whether to enable overriding the environment PUP-5032 - Update node terminus configured_environment to mirror agent_specified_environment   However I can't understand how I should access "configured_environment" or "agent_specified_environment" within the ENC script.   My ideal solution would be to call the node classifier based on that variable, but I don't think this will be possible:

 external_nodes = $codedir/environments/${::agent_specified_environment}/bin/enc.rb

    I was told there can only be 1 ENC, but I can write a main one that is a wrapper script which can

 Add an introductory section about using Bolt with Orchestrator.Note that it will try to inherit config if puppet-task is already setup, can override with Bolt configuration. For run_command, run_script, file_upload, Bolt must be installed on Puppet Masters as a module. puppet-task user needs to have permission to run the Bolt task (part of Bolt-as-a-module), which grants essentially full root access on nodes for which it's allowed.Runs 1 Orchestrator job per call to run_task/run_command/run_script/file_upload.

 Currently when we compile a report of the puppet run, we include a bunch of metrics on how long it took to run certain parts of the puppet run. This is great getting this information, but we also provide a total time metric. This total is simply the sum of all the other times reported in the report. I don't have a lot of faith this is wholly accurate of reality. It relies on the assumption that we've collected run times for all aspects of the puppet run, and none of the time reported are subsets of other times reported. I feel like there is a better way of determining the total time it took to run puppet, and the current way is is too naive for what we need. This is going to take more investigation to flush out exactly the best way to solve this, and if my hunch is totally wrong or not.

 Thanks Johnson Earls. Currently puppet will only tell you that it would have sent a refresh event in noop mode, but it doesn't send the event (so the receiver never has an opportunity to say what it would do). I don't see any easy way of fixing this because puppet only knows about a generic :refresh event. To support the thing you're asking for, I would think puppet would need to have different kinds of events (:refresh, :refresh_noop) or to pass along additional context information about why the refresh is being triggered so that the receiver can "do the right thing". Thoughts Charlie Sharpsteen, Jacob Helwig?

 Thanks Gavin Williams, makes sense the error message should be better to explain that puppet was expecting something of the form Type[title]. I assume the issue is because the error is generated agent-side when the catalog is converted from a resource catalog to a RAL catalog, and we try to generate the autorelations. /cc Henrik Lindberg

Jira (PDOC-225) Data in Modules?

  Re: Data in Modules?

 R.I.Pienaar Since the information after the bracketed type for a param is completely ignored by yard itself, you can put anything there. What Strings could do is to have a convention that for example a hash in puppet language notation inside parentheses following the bracket would be displayed a certain way. That would be kind of like additional meta tags (but those are lot harder to introduce). Something like:

 @param foo [Hash] (lookup_options => { merge => 'deep' }) foo is a param for foo details...

  You would have to do some static declaration like that as the information can not be obtained statically from hiera because the effective lookup_options may depend on values at runtime. Since that is the case, maybe it is just as good to spell it out in the text in free form - so if code does something fancy you can just say so?

 @param foo [Hash] (* deep merge) foo is a param for foo details

 @param bar [Hash] (* deep merge if bar_deep is true) bar is a param for bar details

Jira (PUP-8349) SPIKE scheduled_task : should we deprecate scheduled_task resource?

  Re: SPIKE scheduled_task : should we deprecate scheduled_task resource?

 Josh Cooper that's fine. We're still actively discussing how we want to go about this. The scheduled_task module revives the core type and provider in the module, overriding them, and setting a new default provider, so that we can ultimately remove the old type / provider from core. Still wondering if the best location to introduce a deprecation is in the original v1 provider in core, in the docs, in both, or in some other combination of locations.

 Apologies, from the description I thought you were referring to the yard-style @author tag. Yeah, I do see the author content in the module skeletons used by puppet module generate. However, we are encouraging users to try the new PDK for this task. It uses https://github.com/puppetlabs/pdk-templates and no author content is present in those templates.

 https://github.com/mcanevet/rspec-puppet-facts/pull/71   This should workaround the non-standard hardwaremodel, I think. The test is hardcoded to work against the facts that I submitted, but maybe someone who is better with rspec can make it more generic?

 So this answer would make sense if Author information didn't currently consume multiple lines in the template. Are you removing the author content from the module skeleton? My proposal doesn't increase the information, it makes it indexable and linkable.

 The resolver for ec2_metadata should also check whether `virtual` => `openstack`, where ec2 metadata would also be present. This is only an issue running under Windows since other OS (at least Linux) reports `virtual` as `kvm` when running in OpenStack.
