Should it not only bind to selected interfaces?

An idea for the need to have assigned an IP for an interface: If user
chooses to have DHCP for a specific interface we create an alias
interface which listens on broadcast and first IP in subnet for DHCP
requests only. This also means first IP in subnet must be reserved if
users wants to have DHCP support.

Idea is that users are able to create a DHCP service on every

I still need to sort out how to make it available on ovs-bridge. Any

No idea. But we want to start with DHCP.

DNS is only a caching and forwarding DNS server so a real DNS server is

[pve-devel] spice: problems when installing new certificate

2015-01-11 Thread Michael Rasmussen
Hi all,

I had to change my certificate this week-end since it had expired.
Installing new certificate like I have wrote in the wiki (intermediate
certificate) but spice refused to validate the new certificate.

I try all combinations of restarting the following:
pve-cluster
pvedaemon
pveproxy
spiceproxy

but to no vain. Since I was out of any more ideas I migrated all VM's
and CT's from one node at restarted the node and low and behold after
restart of only one node everything work again!!

My question is therefore: Which daemons needs to be restarted after
changing certificate?

I had hoped changing certificate could be done without having to
restart a node.

inside of an OpenVZ container. After the failure you can try
 adding |innodb_use_native_aio = 0| to |/etc/mysql/my.cnf| and then
 run |dpkg --configure -a|.

There is in fact two solutions. See
http://forum.openvz.org/index.php?t=msgth=10181goto=47380S=4814f1b69ddeba17f6296ab9f349c7f5#msg_47380

For solution 2 see:
http://www.lowendtalk.com/discussion/40213/openvz-fs-aio-max-nr

Since users can change the settings in my.cnf I think this is not the
proper solution. Solution 2 is safe since the setting is transparent
to users.

I just see on vmware forum some amd microcode bug, and see that dell provide

I'll try to update to see if it's help.

Could this, given the high load, be caused by a race condition which is
solved in the new microcode?

Have you tried connecting a serial console to one of the nodes?

If you have IPMI on the nodes you should also be able to monitor
further than on the default console.

Sounds like a race condition to me. I also think high load due to lots

Adding to above: I have extended the Unix philosophy to servers as well
like this. On a server I only have one service which does it well, or
perhaps 2 or 3 if the services is tightly coupled.

In this way, except for a few, all my servers has specs like this:
CPU: 1 - 4
RAM: 1 - 4 GB
Disks: 1 - 2 (Either one 16 - 24 GB or one 8 GB and one 20 - 30 GB). A
few which needs a lot of space has a second disk 200 - 500 GB.
Requirements larger than that will be a disk directly from NAS|SAN
either as block device or as shared storage through NFS.

Above means fast migration, fast snapshot, and fast backup for most.

[pve-devel] bug discovered

2014-11-11 Thread Michael Rasmussen
Hi Dietmar,

Found a bug this evening which results in a broken cluster.

Howto replicate bug:
We assume an existing cluster exist on node pve122.

1) Create a fresh proxmox node. Lets call it pve123
2) login to this node as root
3) cd /etc/pve
4) pvecm add pve122
5) initial cluster joining starts which at some point involves
restarting pve-cluster. when pve-cluster restarts the running initial
cluster joining process halts since pve-cluster is not able to remount
pve filesystem since we block remount as our current directory is the
mount point for pve filesystem.

Alternatively you could simply choose the correct target node manually.
The implementation will give you these options for target:

I quick poll.

1) Should the user select a specific target node?
2) Should the user select a list of target nodes?
3) Should the implementation migrate running VM's evenly across all
other nodes?
4) Should the user be able to select any one of the methods above?

[pve-devel] run_command and shellquote

2014-11-02 Thread Michael Rasmussen
Hi Dietmar,

A command needs to be run like this:
/usr/bin/ssh -o 'BatchMode=yes'
-i /etc/pve/priv/zfs/192.168.3.145_id_rsa root@192.168.3.145 zfs set
refreservation=4g tank/vm-100-disk-1

but due to run_command applies shellquote which will apply quotes to
the param refreservation=4g because of '=' to the command the command
ends up like this:
/usr/bin/ssh -o 'BatchMode=yes'
-i /etc/pve/priv/zfs/192.168.3.145_id_rsa root@192.168.3.145 zfs set
'refreservation=4g' tank/vm-100-disk-1

which causes it to fail.

Any way to prevent shellquote to apply qoutes to refreservation=4g ?

With my patch cloning is still possible only from the command line, because
 the
WEB interface currently doesn't allow it for VMs with device disks.

Would it not simply be easier if you choose an image format which
support your needs?

In your case choosing Qcow2 as image format for your VMs seems
appropriate since this will give you the choice of doing snapshots of
your VMs before doing any changes and the decide after your changes
whether to rollback the changes or delete the snapshot.

[pve-devel] backup

2014-10-18 Thread Michael Rasmussen
Hi all,

I just discovered that when Proxmox initiates the configured automatic
backup it runs backups from each node in the cluster in parallel. I
wonder whether this could be the cause for users now and then see some
of the backups fails given the backup storage is to slow storage?

Maybe a setting in the backup gui when checked prevents running
parallel backups could solve this issue?

Based on features (power loss protection) and price, the Crucial MX100 looks

I have very god experience with Intel and Corsair SSDs so you could

When you are to compare specs for SSDs or HDD's for that matter to be
used in a remote storage what do you consider most important? Max
read/write MB/s or read/write IOPS?

Personally I should think when we are looking at SSD's max read/write
MB/s is irrelevant since the network will always be the bottleneck
(AFAIK no network is cable of providing throughput 400 MB/s) so I
would compare read/write IOPS instead.

As I see no personal value in this I did not want to get involved. The
current setup suits my needs and I also find it properly encapsulated
and well structured. If however, someone will extend it to also enable
ZFS on the host I have no objections as long as this extension does not
brake any running setups.

 Ok, sound reasonable.

And I forgot to mention: 50% of the code is generic and provided we
only need to provide DNS et al the required code for this will only
raise the lines of code by 10-15%.

My intended way of doing it as IPv6 stateless DHCPv6. Read more here:
http://blog.geoff.co.uk/2011/08/02/ipv6-automated-network-configuration/

When SLAAC with RDNSS is widely accepted this will be the way to go and
this will be easy provided we use IPv6 stateless DHCPv6. Stateful
DHCPv6 as we know from DHCPv4 is a bastard specification anyway since
it is not able to provide default routers so SLAAC will be required
anyway.

[pve-devel] dhcp server

2014-07-25 Thread Michael Rasmussen
Hi all,

The dhcp server is completed with the following limitations:
1) A monitor for changing binding state for expired leases is missing
2) No IPv6 functionality yet since no module is available for IPv6.
IPv6 dhcp seems to be completely different from IPv4 dhcp which
requires a lot of reading. Since no module seems to exists in perl for
DHCP6 I will need to create a module from scratch. This can take some
time. From what I have discovered so far IPv6 seems to come with a
simple DHCP server build in. Clients use this by network neighborhood
discovery and it is only needed for boundary routers which is taken
care of by hardware routers/switches. Any comments?

You can clone the code from here:
git clone git://git.datanom.net/pve-dhcp-server.git

Please post comments and questions to the maillist.

[pve-devel] VirtIO net: Bug in Debian Wheezy

2014-07-23 Thread Michael Rasmussen
Hi all,

While finishing my DHCP server prototype I have run into this bug in
Debian Wheezy which is still open in 7.6.

Read more here: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=717217
The bug report also has a fix.

Maybe others has bump into this so it might be worth mentioning on the

Like this, each host have a dhcp server which respond only to vms hosted on

It should not be necessary since each host knows the MAC for each VM
running on the host and because the discover request will contain the
MAC of the client we can filter on MAC in the DHCP server. This way
only the host hosting the client will respond to the DHCP request.

Please coordinate this with Alexandre. But I think a prototype would be
interesting, because using perl gives use most flexibility.

As I recall it Alexandre were opting for dnsmasq so I don't think our
efforts will interfere. I am also leaning more to a Perl solution
because we will not depend on the development of dnsmasq and also
dnsmasq is tailored for many other purposes as well.

Does it work for all client OS we use?

I can test (I have these clients installed) with the following clients:
- Windows 7 enterprise edition (XP is EOL and I do not want to install
windows 8 and 8.1 since I will never be using them. The same applies
  to windows server 2008(r1|r2), 2010(r1) and 2013)
- FreeBSD 8+9+10
- OpenBSD 5
- Omnios 151010
- RHEL/CentOS 5,6,7
- Debian 7 + testing and unstable
- Ubuntu 12.04 and 14.04

Anyone missing apart from windows server?

Sure, I also think we do not need those other features.

I will prepare a prototype.

I have made these decisions for design:
1) Leases and config are stored in files placed in /etc/pve to
accommodate sharing between nodes as well as HA, perhaps
in /etc/pve/priv/dhcp. Because of the shared nature how should
distribution be handled?
2) A new tab should be created in the cluster page named DHCP server. A
simple checkbox to enable/disable the server. This config is saved in
datacenter.cfg (dhcpd: 0|1)
3) When a node starts it will read the option dhcpd to deside whether
to start dhcp service or not.
4) There should be some sort of monitoring of this config so that all
nodes react properly to disabling or enabling dhcp service.
5) The new tab should present the user a drop-down with known
interfaces for which dhcp services can be enabled. Choosing an
interface will open a config block where the following options is
available:
   - range in net
   - lease time
   - renew time
   - gateway
   - dns server
   - optional list of MAC's which will be allowed to request an IP
   - optional list of MAC's which will be assigned a 'static' IP
   - optional ntp server

For each of the config blocks should be possible to disable/enable and
delete - a checkbox for enable/disable and a button for delete.

Anything else missing above?

I will begin looking into the making the perl prototype others will in
parallel could start implementing the tab and rpc part for
configuration and control since I believe this part will be necessary
even if the dnsmasq road is chosen.

1b) Several clients request for an IP simultaneously
2b) Each nodes listen so each could give a reply simultaneously and
therefore the same IP could be distributed to different clients!

The problem is that each node has its own copy of the lease file and
that merging is done by corosync after a node has made changes to the
file so we will need to implement some kind of two-phase commit among
the nodes taking part in the cluster. Alternatively we deside that only
one node is handling DHCP requests at a time but this will break the
concept of multi master functionality in proxmox.

Test has been made against a dnsmasq server running on FreeBSD and

This hard to write/read because you need to remember the correct order.

So I thought about using something like:

 in ACCEPT(MACRO) -i net0 -source 192.168.2.0 -dest 1.2.3.4 -p tcp -dport 80
 -sport 20

This is a bit harder to parse, but it is easy to add more options in future.

Why not stick to the iptables format?

After considerations I have come to the conclusion that this is
intentional since the lock is controlled higher up in the chain of

This is therefore no bug. I consider the waiting patches ready for

[pve-devel] kvm command: discovered bug

2014-05-11 Thread Michael Rasmussen
Hi Dietmar,

While testing patches send to zfs-plugin I have come across a small bug
related to the iscsi options used with the kvm command to start a vm.
This bug was discovered while testing the patch adding host and target
group to comstar. The bug is that since initiator name is not part of
the options to iscsi libiscsi will use a default initiator name which
is:

By default qemu will use the iSCSI initiator-name
'iqn.2008-11.org.linux-kvm[:name]' but this can also be set from the
command line or a configuration file. (man kvm)

The initiator name can be configured on the command line like:
-iscsi 'initiator-name=iqn.1993-08.org.debian:01:ddcb3fadcb55'

The initiator name should be parsed from: /etc/iscsi/initiatorname.iscsi
Such a file will exist on every node in a cluster and each node will
have a unique initiator name. As long as every node's initiator name is
registered as a member of the host group on the storage server any
initiator name from one of the nodes will be accepted.

Failing to supply a initiator name on the command line means that the
storage server must assign a target to host and target group ALL
(target can be accessed from any client on the network!)

Should I make a patch which applies the above?

It will not brake anything for current setups since current setups must
already be configured to use ALL for host and target groups since this
is the only way the current setup will work.

Have tested with CentOS-6.5 and I can confirm that it works with virtio
and megaraid. No speed monster though;-)

this is strange, I never have had any problem with scsi in guest (virtio or

I'll send a update to libiscsi, the library used by qemu-kvm to access to
 iscsi:// paths.

We don't have updated it since 1 year, maybe they are a bug for your setup

I can confirm exactly the same behavior here as Adrian.

So, it works fine with virtio ide, but any scsi (virtio, lsi, megaraid)

Yes, but different errors.
seabios only sees disks if using megaraid or virtio-scsi. No lsi or
vmware scsi disks are detected by seabios

 Maybe it's a regression with qemu-kvm 1.7.

Or perhaps seabios?

I have send 2 patchs, to update libiscsi and after qemu-kvm.

 can you test them ?

I will test later this evening.
