[pydotorg-www] Conversion to emeritus status

2020-05-29 Thread Steve Holden
Hi Ewa, Betsy, webmasters and pydotorgers,

With my 70th birthday coming up, even though I continue to work happily
it's definitely time to wind some activities down. As you know I've been
planning to do this for some time, so I'm sure this request to convert to
emeritus status will come as no surprise.

The only regular duty I have been performing for the Foundation of late is
that of webmaster, and with this email I am also withdrawing from that
duty. I will remain as a list administrator until someone else steps up, a
I believe I am the only currently active admin for the list.

I became a member of the Foundation on Guido's nomination at the General
Meeting immediately after the first PyCon in 2003. In an interview shortly
before that Guido had told me that he felt the PSF needed "adult
supervision." Looking at what the Foundation has become I am sure he no
longer feels the same insecurity.

My best wishes to all those who remain and continue to enrich the Python
community in so many diverse ways. It's now time for me to build the
man-cave I've been planning and get on with some hobby interests.

Best wishes,
Steve

Hi Tom,

Thanks for your email. Surprisingly perhaps, spaces in Wiki names seem to
work just fine. I've given your Wiki account editor permissions. I hope you
can log in!

Kind regards,
Steve

Thanks Piyush,

I have forwarded this email to our web development team.

I rather doubt the information is up to date, since I don't think Mercurial
is used to maintain the source for the site. You will notice that the most
recent referenced date in the .hg directory is around eight years go.

Re: [pydotorg-www] [Webmaster] Telkom University Join to be public mirror

2020-01-20 Thread Steve Holden
Hi Hanang,

Thanks for your inquiry.

The PSF no longer publishes any information about public mirroring sites:
there were many administrative issues and we felt they tended to divert
traffic away from python.org and towards other sites of unknown quality.
For these reasons the PSF has invested significantly in its Internet
presence in recent years. Our third-party content delivery network is
intended to provide low latency to all locations, so I am a little
surprised to learn that local mirroring would seem attractive.

Many sites have established local caching of the PyPI site, and this is a
perfectly acceptable use of the data. Again, we would not expect to
advertise the presence of such sites as public resources.

If you feel that the performance of python.org resources is insufficient in
your area I can certainly put you in touch with operations staff to address
the issues you are experiencing. I have copied them on this email for
information.

Kind regards,
Steve

Re: [pydotorg-www] Resource book lists are mostly one publishing house

2019-12-16 Thread Steve Holden
Escalate this to Board? There are clearly sponsorship issues to be
considered, and I know Packt generates a portion of revenues to the
Foundation so this needs to be considered where all the information is
available. Copying PSF staffers in.

As a member of the sponsorship committee I believe it's time for the
Foundation to plant a clear stake in the ground, delete many or even all of
the references to Packt publications and publish a blog post stating why
the action was taken.

I believe Packt have taken advantage of a liberal regime, but I think
rather than being punitive we should simply "reset" them: our fault for not
being clearer about the rules, now EVERYBODY knows what they are let's
start again. Or maybe we just need wiki editors to start giving their
publications some honest reviews. I withdrew as an editorial consultant
from one proposed work that still went ahead despite
serious quality issues, and I have heard enough similar stories from other
authors/reviewers that I believe Packt's actions may be against the
membership's interests in promoting works of dubious value. The ultimate
decision, however, is well above my now happily lowly pay grade.

Given that I start my Christmas vacation tomorrow evening, let me take this
opportunity to wish all readers the very best of everything over their
festive season, and a prosperous new year.

Kind regards,
Steve Holden

2019-12-08 Thread Steve Holden
Thanks for being prepared to share your work with the larger Python
community.

The Wiki is user-edited, so you need to set up a user account on the Wiki
at https://wiki.python.org/moin/FrontPage?action=newaccount if you haven't
already done so, then let us (pydotorg-www@) know what it is. Someone will
make you an editor, and you can modify the ProblemSets page as appropriate.

Re: [pydotorg-www] Performance Tips: outdated

2019-11-18 Thread Steve Holden
Hi Thomas,

Thanks for your note. You are correct, the information is very outdated
(and a lot of it possibly therefore completely inappropriate).

The Wiki is a user-editable resource, and if you would like to join the
editors team it's always good to have extra help. Just let us know your
Wiki account name and we can arrange it.

Unfortunately if nobody feels moved to make the edits they will remain
unmade.

As a fallback, I do know that the Python Software Foundation has
commissioned a consulting organisation to handle transition from Python 2,
and I know the Wiki content is being included in that review, so it seems
unlikely the out-of-date version will remain for too much longer.

Kind regards,
Steve Holden

I'm afraid I can't answer that question: I'm getting a 404 for your

I take it you've checked your spam folder for any messages that might have

Re: [pydotorg-www] Python Wiki Editing Request- Developer from Washington DC

2019-07-08 Thread Steve Holden
First of all, please stop sending us passwords! We do not want to know what
your password is. You should never share passwords with anyone.

Wiki editors are expected to be reasonably security-aware, and this
correspondence is not giving me much confidence.

Please create a new Wiki account using an entirely new identity, and tell
us ONLY THE ACCOUNT NAME. If you can persuade someone to add that name to
the editors list you will be good to go. I personally won't take that
responsibility, given that we are subject to regular attacks.

Steve Holden

Thanks Tara. This happens all the time, but automated systems spot and
reject most attempts. That particular page should only be editable by our

remove what is certainly undesirable content.

2019-06-19 Thread Steve Holden
First you need to identify yourself to the Wiki system.

Fill out the form at
https://wiki.python.org/moin/LocalUserGroups?action=newaccount and then let
us know what you used for the "Name" field. Please "reply all" to maximise
the chances that someone will action your request (I've just started work
and so am unavailable for a while).

Kind regards

Re: [pydotorg-www] [Webmaster] bugs.python.org login not work

2019-05-28 Thread Steve Holden
I believe OAuth authentication (which I believe was OpenId) has been
removed rather than undertake the work of updating to more recent
standards. But that happened (I believe) several years ago, so if this is a
recent issue (i.e. if it only changed for you last week) then we should
identify the problem.

Copied to the pydotorg-www list, for their attention, since webmaster is
mostly about content.

Re: [pydotorg-www] python2 EoL wiki "Python2orPython3"

2019-05-21 Thread Steve Holden
Ni, all. (That was a typo for "Hi", but it remains in homage to Brett
Cannon).

As the author of the "Migration and Coexistence" chapter of "Python in a
Nutshell" this is a topic I've been following quite closely, though more
from the "regular user" point of view than as a developer. I'd be happy to
take part in an email discussion about the shape and tone of the proposed
content, given the significance of this year-end. I can't guarantee having
much time to do the actual writing, but will undertake to at least stay in
touch with the process.

My own personal preference would be to wave a respectful goodbye to 2.7
from the (Python core) developer community, with encouragement to all who
aspire to the open source ethic to continue to breathe life into those bits
that remain useful. Probably the same question should be debated within the
PSF more broadly, since the Foundation might well be prepared to act as a
continued conduit for support to the Python 2 community.

The main thrust should definitely be "only if you absolutely have to, for
well-defined reasons." I could list some good reasons. The tone should be
forward-looking without sounding in any way triumphal or
self-congratulatory. With a definite conclusion that Python 2's future is
assured as long as it retains the same active community spirit that it
created.

Kind regards,
Steve Holden

The PSF has a documentation group who will, I am sure, be delighted to
welcome you into the community and help you make plans for your translation.

I'm not actually sure whether you'd be better talking to doc-sig (
https://mail.python.org/mailman/listinfo/doc-sig) or the docs list (
https://mail.python.org/mailman/listinfo/docs. A glimpse at the archives
indicates the latter is rather more active, so probably start there.

Many thanks for your interest in Python and your willingness to help serve
its communities!

Hi Fred,

Me again! I monitor this list. I have noticed myself in the past that
information about how to help with python.org could be more prominent, and
hope that you will get some contact as a result of your email.

If not, perhaps your next "line of attack" could be to submit an issue to
https://github.com/python/pythondotorg/issues - I don't know whether you've
actually looked at the site's source, but it's all there for you to see. I
would expectraising an issue would get a response from the relevant
developers.

2019-03-18 Thread Steve Holden
Fred might also want to join the pydotorg-www list, which I've copied on
this reply, because while webmaster mostly handles questions about existing
content, our friends on pydotorg-www are more active in maintaining the
content.

There doesn't currently seem to be much of a "funnel" directing people
towards contributing the python.org, so I just wanted to underline that we
really DO need help and new blood, so your approach is more than welcome.
Maybe one of your enhancements can be the pages that would have got you
into the contributor community easier?

Thanks for your interest!

Hi MaryBeth,

Sorry about the problems - I don't know why
https://wiki.python.org/moin/FrontPage?action=newaccount is spinning its
wheels, I end with a 504 (Gateway Timeout), but I don't yet know what that
means. I'm hoping one of the Wiki admins can step in here with more
information.

In accord with what’s been said so far. Think of the Wikibeditorial force

Re: [pydotorg-www] Edits of Python GUI pages

2018-08-20 Thread Steve Holden
Hi Mike,

I see Chris has sorted out access for you. I think the whole area of GUI
documentation is in need of some love, so if you want to do some curation
that would be really useful (though naturally you shouldn't feel obliged to
do anything - this is open source).

It's confusing for readers the way the material is currently organised, and
much of it is now of historical interest only (there will never be another
Pyjamas release, for example). If you have the time and the inclination I'm
sure you would be helping many readers.

Re: [pydotorg-www] Page Edit Request

Both problems would be solved with a change to

An *iterable* object is an object that implements __iter__, which is
expected to return an *iterator* object.

Chris,

Thanks for caring. A long, long time ago I had dreams of a crew of
thousands of PyWikiGnomes, working in teams to curate areas of interest.

While that hasn't happened yet, we can dream. Do feel free to point any
other like-minded individuals our way!

Re: [pydotorg-www] Permission to edit a page

2018-01-30 Thread Steve Holden
Hi Tuhin,

I regret to say that wiki sign-up is a different procedure from sign-up to
python.org (which frankly currently serves little real purpose).

You can sign up at https://wiki.python.org/moin/FrontPage?action=newaccount,
and once you let us know your username we can add you to the editors list.
