Hi,
Using QGIS 1.9 I've rendered one third of the Alps with 15 different
zoom levels as a hobby project (and serve the world at work on QGIS
server with a simpler symbology). See links and what I've learned from
this below.
Here would be my wish-list should we want to compete with open renderers

Hi list,
Another thing that would be great for symbology would be the ability to
define symbology properties taken from layer columns, so that for the same
layer, feature A can have svgA.svg, feature B have svgB.svg, or
decide which columns set the svg size, color, transparency, rotation, etc.
Good idea I have a mockup UI [attached] for doing this kind of thing.
Idea is: Click on the little database icon a it switches the normal control
onto a combo box so that you can pick from a field.

Nathan, if I understand correctly, your mockup is for labelling, but you
say we could use exactly the same kind for symbology ?. If so, I proposed
in my previous post the Data defined settings tab for symbology, which
will list all the properties wich can be configured this way.
The icon idea is a
Yes the goal would be to use it across the board anywhere this kind of data
binding happens, so labelling or symbology. I only used labelling for an
example because I had that ready for a couple of months ago.
It will require more efforts as you will have to change the ui so that

Hello,
After working with the Symbology as a user for the past couple of days and
trying to accomplish various things, here is my idea of simplifying things:
Decouple Style management and Style application (renderer) logic at the GUI
level itself.
First let us start where it all begins,
+ The designer to perform following functions
- Create new symbols/styles
- Grouping and management of styles through a tree structure
- Create and manage virtual groups (or themes) that would pull symbols
from various groups and a combination of renders to create a overall

Hi,
I think improving the symbology system would be very rewarding and
beneficial for many - but be sure to discuss the technical issues with
Martin and Marco. They probably know the system best.
Work on the SVG symbol repository and better management of the SVG
symbols (categories, metadata
