This would indeed be very valuable. I personally see it as a critical
risk for open source geo if we can't tighten our links to CAD (and
unfortunately, that means dealing with these proprietary formats).
Let's hope someone steps up and funds this development!

2018-03-13 Thread Carlo A. Bertelli (Charta s.r.l.)
We have been members of OpenDWG then Open Design Alliance for years. Teigha
is not open source, but we never paid any fee to use the converter/viewer,
I don't know if there is any limitation to use the (binary) libraries
included. I don't think so, but I may be wrong.
Licensing the source is unfortunately not free (as in free beer) and open
is "members only" which is a real pity.
Anyway, GDAL has a new driver based on the free (as in free speech as well
as in free beer) Libopencad (https://github.com/sandyre/libopencad), it's
called OpenCAD: http://www.gdal.org/drv_cad.html.
Unfortunately it does not cover DGN v8. I think Alexandr Borzykh could
extend his library to cover it as it is similar to DWG (it has no relation
to previous "true" DGN format).

"This driver requires to be built against the (non open source) Open Design
Alliance Teiga library."

And that library is proprietary and only available for a fee (see
https://www.opendesign.com/join).

[QGIS-Developer] Microstation DGN v8

2018-03-13 Thread Erik Leemreijze
Hello,

This is the first time I ask a question via the mailing list. I'm not sure
if this is the right way. I hope this is the right.

I work for a local government in the Netherlands and have been exploring
QGis for our organization for a year now. I am currently using QGIS 2.18.11.
During the exploration of QGis I ran into the following problem. Much work
within our organization is being done with the program Bentley Microstation
V8i. We have thousands in the DGN v8 format and I have noticed that they can
not be loaded into QGis. I can only load the files if I first export them to
the DGN v7 format.

I went looking for a solution and according to this website
(http://www.gdal.org/drv_dgnv8.html) it should actually be possible to load
the file format DGN v8 in QGis 2.18 and 3.0. However, it still does not
work. Does anyone know a solution for this problem?

Yours,

Erik Leemreijze
