Re: [Qgis-user] Cool Features of QGIS

Hi Nyall, Clifford,

Could not agree more! Personally, I would say
"http://monde-geospatial.com/10-differences-between-commercial-and-open-source-gis-software/;
is a prime example "of very poorly researched posts on that site". But
monde-geospatial is unfortunately not the only superficial site of that sort...

What "Cool features" are depends on what topic your audience is interested in
and what their background is (consultants, researchers, public authorities). So
it is hard to come up with general suggestions what to highlight.
What I would say it the big pluss of the OSGeo family is interoperability and
that you for many tasks find Open Source solutions that in many cases even
outperform expensive additional licenses in other GIS...
And that development of "cool features" is very much "user-driven". So, you can
say Open Source is "practicioneers tools".

Cheers
Stefan

Just be careful with articles from monde-geospatial. I've seen a lot of very
poorly researched posts on that site, especially when they are comparing

this also might be interesting. I've used the information from that site

[Qgis-user] First Time User Map

2017-12-05 Per discussione Ethan Zhao
Hi all!

I am from the Google Code-In 2017 and one of my tasks was to create a
thematic map (about single topic/theme). The topic I chose was drought
frequency, and I obtained my data from NASA's Earthdata.

The link to my map is attached here
 (
https://www.dropbox.com/s/htmeo5ml5noi1bg/droughtmap.pdf?dl=0). I would
really appreciate any feedback to help me improve this map and my maps in
the future since I created this by watching Youtube tutorials and tinkering
with settings.

(Map Info: Base map was from OpenLayers, with a vector layer for state
boundaries and a raster layer for drought hazard)

Thanks!

Re: [QGIS-it-user] un aiuto per un grafico

  Grazie pertutti i suggerimenti.
Effettivamente mentre leggevo i post

Hi all,

think it's no alternative to use DB views, SQL or virtual layers as I use
dynamic parameters as scale and map extend in my python function. Thanks for
your ideas!

Vi funziona?

Re: [Qgis-user] QGIS doesn’t search for shp vector layers

2017-12-05 Per discussione Andre Joost

Am 05.12.2017 um 06:05 schrieb Sarah:

In the past, when I went to open a vector layer, QGISautomatically
found shape files. Then I changed the option to MapInfo to opensome
MapInfo files. Now the browse dialogue doesn’t give me an option to
find .shpfiles. If I navigate to a folder including shape files, the
open vector browse boxshows it as empty. I can manually find the
shape files by typing *.shp into thedialogue box (open vector\browse)
and then it shows them, but next time I go toopen another vector
layer it reverts to the last file format I set (MapInfo)and I have to
keep typing in *.shp to get it to hunt for shape files. Thedialogue
box doesn’t have an option to search for all file formats nor
anoption to go back to searching for ESRI shape files. How can I make
it go backto the default behaviour where it automatically found .shp
files without mehaving to type in *.shp every time I want to find a
shape file? I am using QGIS2.18.2.

From the top menu, select Layer -> Add Layer -> Add Vector Layer, then
click on Browse.

At the bottom of the form, you should have an input box labelled file
name, and right to it a filter dropdown box. The long list starts with
"All files (*.*)", "ESRI Shapefiles" some rows below, and ends with
"X-Plane/Flightgear". Unfortunately, there is no vertical scroll bar (at
least on Windows). You need a mouse wheel to see the filetypes not
visible. Without a mouse wheel you have to use cursor up and down to see
the rest of the list.

Once you have selected "ESRI Shapefile", it will be remembered for the
next use of that form. Same as you have chosen Mapinfo.

André Joost
