I was excited to discover recently that you can drag and drop DXF layers
into QGIS.
The layer keeps its reference to the dxf and when the dxf is changed the
layer is updated.
The only problem I have had is that if I have the layer open in QGIS

I have not seen this error before. I would create a new user profile to test
(never hurts). My gut feeling is that your files are possibly corrupted. Can
you read the file with another computer. I would scan the disk for possible
errors (check disk on Windows).
