Re: [Qgis-user] Placing random points

2023-03-23 Thread Andrea Giudiceandrea via QGIS-User

Hi Sebastien,
in addition to the suggestion given by Nyall Dawson, I would suggest you
using the "Random points in layer bounds" algorithm: you just need to
specify the total number of random points to be generated. The resulting
layer will contain the specified number of points and such points will
fall inside the polygons.

It seems to me that the "Random points in extent" algorithm, suggested
by Chris Hermansen, may not be suitable for your needs: while the
resulting layer will contain the specified number of points, such points
will fall inside the extent of the layer containing the polygons, so it
is not guaranteed that such points will actually fall inside the polygons.

Best regards,

Andrea Giudiceandrea

How about dissolving the polygons into a single feature and then
placing the desired random number of points inside this dissolved
feature?

Does

not accomplish what you want? Using say the bounding box for all the

Re: [Qgis-user] Map tips not showing

2023-03-23 Thread Thayer Young via QGIS-User
 Hi Adam,
I should have said to activate it from the "View" menu, by clicking on "Show
Map Tips" there, I did find that the first time I tried with the icon it did
not seem to work, but when I clicked on it in the "View" menu it did start
working, and after that I was able to toggle it on and off with the icon.

Sounds like you are doing what is necessary, and Andrea's suggestions will
hopefully get you there, especially the last one try it with a new user profile
with no plugins (Settings/User Profiles/New Profile...).

In my trouble shooting I was able to reproduce your problem on an older install
of nightly/DEV (3.29.0, f23bdbdad1 , Qt 5.15.2, Python 3.9.5, GDAL 3.3.2) with
a fresh user. Unfortunately the build for nightly for MacOS is failing right
now, but I can confirm that map tips work in the latest LTR and PR (3.30.0). So
it may have been fixed already? but the fix doesn't work on your build for some
reason. You may want to report this as a bug, just be prepared for the response
"it works on my machine", it may be specific to your Linux, or to the QGIS
build that you are using.

By the way, please forgive my use of ESRI terminology when I called the
"Layers" panel the "table of contents". Old habits are hard to break.

Hi Thayer,

Many thanks for your reply!

> Make sure you have the layer selected in the table of contents

I can't find anything called "table of contents" but there is a panel
called "Layers" where I can tick/untick them to show/hide layers, and
if I click on a layer to select it (a layer with HTML in the Display
properties) then the layer name is drawn in the layer list with a blue
background to indicate it is selected, however I still don't see any
popups when hovering over that layer's markers on the map.

> and hover over the feature for several seconds (e.g. 2 or 3). When I
> say hover, I mean do not move the pointer.

I have hovered for 10 seconds with my hand off the mouse to be extra
sure and still nothing appears.  In the options, the popup time is the
default of 850 milliseconds.  If I hover over the buttons on the
toolbar then tooltips appear successfully, as they do throughout the
various dialog boxes, so it doesn't appear to be a problem with my
technique.

I am not sure how exact you have to be when hovering over the symbol on
the map, but I have tried hovering over a bunch of symbols that were
clustered together, a few pixels above/below/beside the marker,
enlarging the marker, etc. but nothing is popping up.

> Make sure that there is a check mark by "Show Map Tips" in the "View"

There is no check mark but the icon is drawn "pressed" (like the
toolbar button) when it is activated.  I can select it multiple times
to alternate between "normal" and "pressed", just like the toolbar
button.  Regardless of whether the menu item is drawn in the pressed
state or not, there are no popups.

> You might want to try changing the tool, and click on the map window
> or pan the window and try hovering again.

I tried changing to the zoom tool and clicking a few times, then
hovering - no popup.  I changed back to the pan tool - no popup.  I
tried panning around a bit and hovering again - no popup.

> Also you may want to restart QGIS and start from scratch setting up

I have restarted QGIS and added new HTML to a different feature, but
there is still no popup.

> etc. and it works for me, I just have to change the text or

I tried changing the colour like this but still no popup.  I have tried
it with a dark satellite map background and the default grey background
and can't see any hint of a popup.  I have also tried setting the popup
to just plain text without using any fields (so it should always
display even if the fields are all blank) but still no popup.

Any other ideas what could be happening?

Many thanks,
Adam.

No, the locale on your computer is not connected to the locale in
QGIS' QSettings.

There is a QSettings set in every QGIS profile.

If nothing has SET it yet, it is not there. Software should check IF
it is set, OR give a default.

Re: [Qgis-user] Couldn't load plugin XY due to an error when calling its classFactory() method

2023-03-23 Thread Bo Victor Thomsen via QGIS-User
That's an old error. And I really don't know why it hasn't been fixed.
But to circumvent it:

 * Activate the "Override System Locale" checkbox in Menu: "Settings"
--> "Options" --> top of section "General"
 * Choose the right values in the now visible comboboxes: "User
Interface translation" and "Locale" (Just beneath the checkbox)
 * Save the new choices and restart QGIS

Dear QGIS developers: Please fix this problem ASAP. I (and about every
other user in Denmark) have had this problem for ages. Being a
non-english QGIS user is probably the cause of it.

Yes,

Funnily enough I ran into this issue just today too, with no special
setup but a clean new profile I created yesterday and had been using
in a training since. Not sure what could have caused the key to get
removed. I had switched between system locale, English and back once.
The first plugin I installed crashed with this.

Took a second look in the lunch break. The issue has been long fixed in
the repository (August 2019!
https://github.com/g-sherman/Qgis-Plugin-Builder/issues/116) but an
updated version of the Plugin Builder was never published so people
using it will create buggy code with it. It would be great if an update
could be published.

Re: [Qgis-user] Qgis server : install on Linux Debian

2023-03-23 Thread celati Laurent via QGIS-User
Good morning,
Thanks a lot for your message.

I uninstalled everything I had installed up to now (from the Debian
repository) which only offered the qgis server 3.10 version.
I added the official qgis repository which allowed to install the version
of qgis server 3.30. For information, the qgis project that I am trying to
serve is version 3.28 and not 3.30.
This is the current error message I am getting now:

Do you know what is the request parameter within the URL ?
Someone can help me? Thanks a lot.

[Qgis-user] QGIS and the Victorian Submarine Telegraph Cables

2023-03-23 Thread John Moyle via QGIS-User
Help! I am looking for a young person who needs to improve their CV by
adding an authorship of an academic paper! I'm too old to learn QGIS and I
have tried! The paper will be a correlation of Victorian submarine cable
failure with its causes (tectonic plate shifts, landslides, volcanoes etc).
I have collected all the data. Someone with an interest in History of
Technology could even have lead authorship as I'm too old to care about
that! Preferably she/he would be near the CV36 area of Warwickshire in the
UK

I tried this, but there was no change.

> same version of QGIS from Flatpack [2]?

I had a look at Flatpak but it seemed rather scary - it wanted to
install a whole bunch of dependencies - Gnome, KDE, etc. so I didn't
want to risk it breaking my system.

Instead I downloaded the Docker version and ran that, and that worked -
it showed the popups!

However that is version 3.31.0-Master, apparently a development
version, but with an older Qt version (5.15.3, vs my system with
5.15.8). It's also running an older Python (3.10.6 vs 3.10.10), older
GDAL (3.4.1 vs 3.6.3), and so on.

I will experiment a bit more with different versions, but it looks like
the problem is that some newer library version breaks the popups?

Cheers,
Adam.

[Qgis-user] Placing random points

2023-03-23 Thread Thomas Sebastien via QGIS-User
Dear QGIS users,

I’m trying to place a small number of points, n, randomly in a large number of
polygons, N. But, the Vector>Research Tools> Random points in polygons tool
only lets me place a minimum of 1 random point in each of the N polygons, i.e N
points when I only need n. Do you know a way I can go about this?

Thanks,

Sebastien

Re: [Qgis-user] Couldn't load plugin XY due to an error when calling its classFactory() method

2023-03-23 Thread Richard Duivenvoorde via QGIS-User

This means that you do not have a 'locale/userLocale' setting...
Which if the plugin tries to find out your language receiveds 'None'
Which it cannot get the first 2 chars from (using [0:2])

If you open the python console in QGIS, and paste/enter:

QSettings().value('locale/userLocale')
you will probably see nothing or None or Null or so.
With me it shows 'en_US'

To make sure you HAVE such a setting, you could SET it (in python console):
QSettings().setValue('locale/userLocale', 'en_US')
or another preferred language
QSettings().setValue('locale/userLocale', 'nl_NL')
QSettings().setValue('locale/userLocale', 'de_DE')

Then all plugins checking the language in one way or another will at least get
the right locale.

It would even be better, if the code in the plugin code would be changed from:
QSettings().value('locale/userLocale')
to
QSettings().value('locale/userLocale', 'en_US')
because THEN if a user does not have a locale/userLocale setting it will return
a default en_US value

(@gary: I'm not sure but I think this comes from the plugin builder, is that
possible?)

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Richard Duivenvoorde

Hi,

if the plugins are considered a security risk (no matter by whom and no matter
if this is justified or not) then probably you should block access to all urls
holding plugins on the network level. Your proposed approach is "security by
obscurity" IMHO.
A more bureaucratic approach would be to have the users sign something that
they agree not to download any plugins if not explicitly authorized by
.

Re: [Qgis-user] [EXTERN] Re: [EXTERN] Re: Restrict User's access to extensions

2023-03-23 Thread SGD Süd
Thanks for your thoughts,

we had that in mind as well (blocking url's) but users could just enter new
ones we don't know. Also it's possible to use .zip files.
So the best and easiest thing for me is taking out the whole plugin menu =)
It's like "What i don't know won't hurt me" for our users.
And if they need a new plugin or something they will call us anyway. And
retrieving the menu is easier than unblocking url's if needed.

The last one is always an option but well... users... you know? ;)
(e.g. we're not allowed to surf the www privately but everyone does it)

Kind regards,
Patrick

Hello Richard,

thank you very much for your answer. I meant plugins, not "extensions", sry.

Also, i found a way to simply disable the whole plugin menu within the "
QGISCUSTOMIZATION3.ini".
That's the easiest way and none of our users will find it, since it's under
%appdata%.

Also, i'm not the one who wants to block the plugins ;) but unfortunately i
have to.

Kind regards,

Patrick

Pff, best to use paper maps and a calculator then ;-)

But seriously: disabling selective extensions (I think you mean the python
'plugins') is hard and totally remove python makes QGIS a lot less
productive/usable.

Not sure if you can remove the default qgis plugins repo (or make it
unreachable for your users), but if(!) so, you could try to remove that url,
and create your own repo which ONLY holds plugins you allow (but then you are
responsible to periodically update them). And off course a user can always
download the plugin from plugins.qgis.org as zip and install it (or even copy
it from another computer).

Or do you mean other extensions?

Regards,

Richard Duivenvoorde

Not sure if you can remove the default qgis plugins repo (or make it
unreachable for your users), but if(!) so, you could try to remove that url,
and create your own repo which ONLY holds plugins you allow (but then you are
responsible to periodically update them). And off course a user can always
download the plugin from plugins.qgis.org as zip and install it (or even copy
it from another computer).

Or do you mean other extensions?

Hello there,

i don’t know if this ist he right list, so pardon me if not.

I have the unpleasant task to deploy QGIS to all of our users via matrix42
which is a problem in itself.

Anyways, the question of our - let’s call him „CSO“ – is if we can restrict the
access to extensions.

I know that you can disable it from within the program but anyone could simply
reactivate it or use zip-files or whatever.

Is it possible to restrict that somehow?

Kind regards,

Patrick

Hi Adam,
have you tried if the issue does occur also using a new QGIS user
profile [1]? Have you tried if the issue does occur also installing and
using the same version of QGIS from Flatpack [2]?

Best regards.

Andrea Giudiceandrea
