Agreed that would work, but it is just moving the synchronisation problem
upstream so that it now sits between my local SQL server and the main one
that every one works from.
I am thinking of trying to put together a Python program that will grab all
of the SQL requirements, download the table
If your field computer is windows based, You could install install MS
SQL Server on the field computer, use this as your data store for QGIS
and use a MS SQL Server specific solution for replication

Either way, the idea is not to edit the database offline, just being able
to view the data offline is the goal, then when coming back to a
connection, getting the latest copy of the database
