Hi Paolo,
this is not yet in what we had in mind.
Thinking of it, it is more a new feature of the "section" canvas than an
extension of the measure tool we have today. There
can be several vertical references (many raster, 3D vectors..) available, so I
think it would be easier to read as a display
of a "section" where it would be possible to display in the same place many
profile lines, and 3D sections of datas (think
for instance of geological layers). Why not let it be a dynamic attribute so
that we could identify, style and label it as in
any map?
I put that good idea into the wish list.

Thanks for the news. Are you also planning to add support for 3D on
screen measurements (i.e. an extension of the current ruler, taking into
account total distance considering DTM slope)?

Re: [Qgis-user] Profile section digitising

2016-09-19 Thread Régis Haubourg
Hi Andreas,
VOGIS is really nice regarding graphing profiles from surface elevation
datasets.
The use case here is for viewing and editing profiles against 3D vector
data, not raster, such as water pipes for instance or geological data.
We chose to use a Canvas with all its power for styling and editing.
We think that we could head toward something in core in 3.0 for handling z
data, and merge raster samping over section lines, compared with 3D values
stored in vertex.
That would also be something really inline with multimap canvas proposal.

You can check public plugin prototype by vincent Mora here:

Re: [Qgis-user] Profile section digitising

2016-09-19 Thread Neumann, Andreas
Hi,

There is a nice profile tool in the plugin called "VoGIS-ProfilTool". It
is really flexible regarding your input data (new temporary line, line
from existing layers), vertex options and output options and it allows
to intersect with a surface layer (e.g. landcover, though this did not
work in my tests). It can handle multiple surfaces, but only creates
lines, no filled areas between the surfaces.

I suggest, if you consider writing a new tool, that you would have a
look at the "VoGIS-ProfilTool" to either get a head start and improve on
it.

Greetings,

Andreas

A related route I’ve been looking at is working in 3D in a Postgresql/PostGIS
system and generating the views to support what QGIS needs to work with. This
is part of a bigger geological data management system we are building.

This is something we've been working on for archaeological use cases.
At the moment we digitise our sections using false coordinates, then
use composer to show both the plan and section views. We cheat by
storing the 2D plan coordinates in real space so they show up in
spatial queries and can be visualised by setting a buffer around them,
but they're not really linked in a data or ui sense.

Longer term, I have a cunning plan to start using the new-ish 3D
geometry engine to store the sections in 3D so they can live in the
same shapefiles and so be properly queried, and by clicking on the
section line in plan view a pop-up window shows the section by
flipping the y and z coordinates on the fly. Unfortunately it's on a
very long list of such ideas...

There's also a plugin called Midvatten which does borehole data which
may have some ideas you could borrow.

+i for Vincent and oslandia

it's a good practice to advice to avoid duplicate work!

btw, there is an interesting PR by Alvaro Huarte related with multiple
map canvas... IMHO can be a good generic platform (if extended) to be
a container for vertical profiles, or whatever in a different
projection... or simply use webview annotations.

2016-09-12 Thread Nicolas Cadieux
Hi,
There is a stratigraphy section in this plugin. It's made for archaeology. I
have been meaning to try this for a while now. Have you both looked at it?

Re: [Qgis-user] Profile section digitising

2016-09-12 Thread John Harrop
Lester,

I’ve worked on that a number of times and on different GIS packages. Usually
the simple solution is to generate a profile using an arbitrate projection
system - essentially creating another map, and then adding a frame with that
map into the main layout/map your are building in composer. You might need to
use some pseudo coordinates like the projection your plan is in to make is
simpler. This can be helpful when your sections are N-S or E-W and then the
elevation is an offset from the northing (or easting)

Having said that, we are looking at the possibility of supporting an extension
to QGIS that would develop into an open source section and drill hole package.
Adding that to QGIS will make it very attractive to many kinds of geological
work. We estimate that the cost of supporting the initial work will be not
much different than a few commercial licences for … something else.

Please let me know if this makes enough sense or you need other suggestions.
Or if you are interested in geological plugging for QGIS as well!

[Qgis-user] Profile section digitising

2016-09-12 Thread Lester Anderson
Hello all,

I was wondering if anyone had advice or ideas about digitising profile
data (say on a geological cross-section) that is referenced to a
polyline in the project,

Thanks
