Hi Derek,

the QL-SD sources will be available under the GPL, giving credits to the
original authors, even in the manual. I see no problem here.

All the best

Hi,

The Qubide source code was made available with the permission of Phil
Borman and Ron Dunnett.

I made a great effort to establish the correct permission to make the
Qubide source code available, as I do not want to be accused of being a
software pirate...

The sources Adrian sent me do not seem to contain any code for IDE at
all. So Qubide is probably still what Dave needs. It could make sense to
ask Richard Zidlicky, he developed Qubide to version 3.

I have used Qubide version 3 on the Q60, it worked fine. However a

Adrian,

Please do not be offended.

We are developing revised hardware and we want to use a known working driver
following the "only change one thing at a time" rule. Once we have the
hardware 100%, we want to make some driver revisions to do with initializing
devices. We have as a design goal that the new IDE interface is 100%
software compatible with the original QubIDE, so the new driver can be
applied to original QubIDEs also.

Once that is done, those changes can be applied to either driver.

At this time, QubIDE has an extremely mature and tested driver. The QL-SD
driver contains a lot of new code. We're being conservative. When QL-SD is
in a lot of peoples' hands, we'll see how it handles the different needs and
systems it's in. Then, we'll happily consider it.

I have said this so many times that I am getting really tired of the
repetition!

The QL-SD driver was derived from QUBIDE. It was turned inside-out to
implement replaceable hardware interface routines. It's all there. Don't
reinvent the wheel again! Just look at the hw_xxx routines in the QL-SD
source code and you can see how it's done.

Peter is the man who has custody of the current source, I believe. I do not.

[Ql-Users] Foam pads and IDE and mounts, oh my!

2014-02-02 Thread Dave Park
Hi all,

Yesterday I made a few thousand replacement foam pads on a laser cutter.
They're the exact material in the exact size, they're strong self-adhesive,
and they're great. In a short while I will post a video showing how they
are made and how to use them. I will be selling them in lots of 10, 25 or
100 for just the amount to cover the cost of making and shipping them (if
you're a QUANTA member) or a little more.

Since replacing the pads is a very delicate task suited only for the most
confident and steady of hands, is their someone in the EU who would be
willing to offer an install service? I do not think it is good for data for
microdrive cartridges to be mailed to the US - someone in the EU would be
better suited. You would be able to charge a flat fee for each cartridge
(maybe EURO 0.5 + postage per microdrive?) and then you would just pay me for
the pads at the bulk rate when you have used them.

If you're interested in that, please get in touch.

Secondly, my work with Nasta has made great progress. We have an lmost
finalised design for the QubIDE replacement, which we're calling "Sandy
UltimIDE." The next step is for me to convert Nasta's schematic into a PCB
design, get a couple of prototype PCBs, test then assemble then test some
more.

The provisional spec is:

1 IDE interface, supporting two drives
1 internal location to mount a 1.8" or 2.5" PATA SSD (provisional)
2 internal Compact Flash slots.

This is, frankly, the ultimate IDE (hence the name) for the QL.

There have been some technical improvements including:

* support for more devices - up to five
* cleaner RF signature - no longer passes spurious noise into the IDE cable
* massively reduced power demand - won't put any strain on your power supply

We would like to make further improvements, but unfortunately we do not
have the source of the QubIDE II ROMs. If anyone out there has the source,
we'd be grateful for a copy.

Finally, I am working on a functional QL display case. Made from Lexan (a
thermo polycarbonate so strong they make bullets and riot shields from
it!), it can properly support a QL backplane and many expansions, all
drives, cables and a power supply. The base will be black and engraved with
the Sinclair QL logo and custom details of your system. Everything above
the base will be clear Lexan, putting your QL on view! It will be precision
laser cut, and uniquely customisable. If this interests anyone else, please
get in touch and we'll see what I can do for you.

Oh, and one last thing: The battery adaptors are coming! At last! The 30th
Anniversary is the time of getting things done! An army of spider monkeys
is hammering, typing, bashing, gluing, 3D printing and soldering them as we
speak. Ok! Ok! Artistic license! They'll be shipping around the first week
of March! £12 to the general public, £9 to Quanta members, plus £2 flat
rate shipping for any quantity - the coupon code to get your discount will
be published in the next Quanta magazine. Coupon has no quantity limits.

Note: all our products will have a Quanta discount which, even if you're
just buying a couple of things, could pay for your entire membership. Join
Quanta!

There was a bug in the installer that created the qpc.ini and
qpcdemo.win files write protected when installing using the "all
users" option. This has been fixed. Also, the default qpc.ini file
suppressed the config dialog, which has been fixed, too.

It's still 4.01 as QPC itself has not changed.

This was the first time I used the Installer for QPC2, I had to!
It worked without problems to my non default folder.
And even pick up on my old SMSQ/E settings.

Also congratulations with a new bit of Kilgus, not much of a byte at this
stage.
