Today's the day! My 3M felt order arrived, and I have created the .SVG file to operate the laser cutter. I'll do some test cuts to get the correct intensity, and then I'll churn out several hundred new felt pads which accidentally exceed the specifications of the original pads. This material has a lower surface friction in contact with the back of tape and will cause significantly less wear and less drag. If I can post a photo to the list (suitably shrunk down) I'll try to show you all the laser cutting process. If you need some cartridges to use as part of the display - let me know and I can let you have some of my better ones - I have a few which seem to be in good condition - although not sure how long they will last. One suggestion is to apply glue to the felt pad before it splits - has anyone tried this? I did. Got some old cassete tapes (brand new, pre-recorded tapes from an english course), took off the pads, cut into a suitable size and glued using cyanoacrilate glue on the place of the old pads. I am looking at laser-cutting some felt pads - it's highly accurate... If I have the dimensions of the rollers, I can also make some. I just measured on an unopened cartridge (until now) and the pad is 4mm long, 3mm deep, and 1.5mm high. The microdrive capstan is 5.0 mm high, 6.0 mm diameter, with a 1.75mm hole, on Samsung built microdrives. As an FYI, I have obtained from 3M some of the correct material for audio felt pads, of the type they supplied to BASF and TDK. It even has their adhesive backing :) I'll laser cut it into 4x3mm pieces and mail 10 out to anyone who wants them for $2, £3, €3.60... I'll post payment details in a couple of days. I was just wondering if there were any sources of pinch rollers compatible as replacements in Microdrives. If not, I'm sure that there would be a market for them in the retro scene, both QL and ZX Spectrum. Rich, any ideas?
