PSII: Are there any QL User in Germany left, of even an Club of QL
Partys ?

A few like me are still around and somewhat active. There has even
been a meeting once a year, but this year it looks like it won't
happen again. Therefore the nearest location for me was Eindhoven.

I spoke to Friedemann, who has organised the QL meetings in
Berchtesgaden in the past 4 years or so about 4 or 5 weeks ago.

it looks like is fact now :-(
There was no feedback whatsoever to Friedemann or us at QL Today,
so why bother? Sad, as I would also be there this year (we always
planned our stay in that area around this date after Friedemann
had started the shows, and did so in case it would happen again
this year), but without any interest at all...
There were hardly any visitors at the show last year, so I
believe the lack of response reflects reality in this area.

Cheers Jochen

H! I now wonder what I bought from Jochen when he sent me QPTR. I thought
that was the Pointer Environment by itself. What I got was the QPTR Manual
(now much used), a set of Qmac macros for programming assembler pointer programs
using Qmac, QPTR extensions for programming Pointer Environment in SuperBASIC
and some demo SuperBASIC programs.
Well, QPTR *WAS* the manual, the demo and macros on the disk plus
the extensions to program the Pointer Environment from BASIC. :-)
PTR_GEN, WMAN and HOT_REXT, the so-called Extended Environment, always
came with every JMS program which required it (QD, Fifi, QSpread ...)
(visually free to the customer, although I paid Tony Tebby royalties
for the EE for every new sale, until recently, when he decided he did
not want it anymore)
What would one do with a separately bought PTR_GEN and WMAN and no
program which uses it, I wonder
Not much - except from having non-destructable windows, probably nothing.

Re: [ql-users] Just an idea for a new Product.....

2005-04-24 Thread SMSQ - Jochen Merz
Hi Jeremy,
Tis true! I use thunderbird. It allows you to inspect thesource; and it
is plain text. However under normal display it converts text strings
that start with http: into a URL.

Similarly, it converts all the and at the start of the line into
pretty formatted coloured sidebars. There really is no reason why anyone
should need to send email in html.

However, the main point is, that unless the body of the text in an
email tells me why I'm supposed to click on a link, then I'm unlikely
to. I receive too many to follow random links without knowing why.
Something as simple as Follow this link for Jochen Mertz' special
offers would probably have done the trick.
It has a header trader's ads ... not go to trader's website
(Maybe you should put this in capitals only, double-underline it,
Tony) isn't this explaining enough what the links are?
And Roy's link even says showflyer.
Honestly, if you need the explanation follow this link on a highlit
hyperlink, you may as well ask for information to be added how to click
on a hyperlink or general explanation what a link is...
So what I am saying here is: whatever we do, we can't please
everybody. It is always too much for some, too few information for
others. But somehow I had the feeling that it was just about right
for the majority. Obviously not, as you do not seem to be the only
one who missed it.

(Tony, how about putting please open this letter to see what's inside
on the next real mailings' envelopes.) ;-)

One technique is to get an 0870 (national number) at 7p a minutes and
1p or 2p of the call charge is given to you, this is like the system
that free ISPs use and if I had the money for a second line for a QL ISP
I would use. The Phone Coop (http://www.thephone.coop) used to offer
this service for free, I do not know if they still do.

from outside the UK.

We have similar Service numbers here in Germany (0180), which are a
rip-off. Making the customer pay 9ct/min to get 1ct/min is pretty
bad and only makes the phone companies rich.
I avoid companies offering this kind of service, and especially
companies where you have to call 0900 numbers.
In addition, if you have to call these special numbers from the mobile
phone, then you're totally ripped off ... they cost an average of
50ct/min ... and it still leaves only 1ct at the other end.
(I thought you have minimum wages in the UK - is it allowed to work
for 60p/hour???) ;-)

We could bring the price down to a quarter, or eight, bundle everything

Why not in Spain the next year?
We will celebrate the 20 aniversary of the QL Spanish Version.
We have already place. It will be in Madrid, on March 5.
would you like this?
Well, we would like to come! Roy Wood, Marcel Kilgus and I have already
discussed a possible meeting in Spain some months ago (Madrid,
Barcelona) in combination with a short holiday, but we did not know
whom to contact.

So we asked Graham Wall, who partially lives in Spain, some weeks ago,
and he forwarded our request.
However, March is not really ideal for a combined short holiday
(and a visit to the roller coasters at Movie World Madrid) :-)
We would really like to come, and Madrid sounds perfect, but would
prefer a nicer time of the year, like end of May, or June.

printer there will be a lot of things I shall take into account in making my
choice and the QL is just one of them. I am not going to waste time or money
looking for a QL compatible printer when the QL community has pussyfooted
for years on solving the problem.
More provocatively, in April 2004 three leading lights of the QL community
sat on a Florida beach and decided that solving the printer problem was one
of the main tasks for the 12 months ahead. We are now almost halfway through
that 12 months. Could they give a progress report please?
Well, we did not decide it was one of the main tasks, we all KNOW
it is extremely important.
However, there does not seem to be an easy solution.
We discussed it several times later, but it still looks like
a very difficult task.
In the end, we need an easy-to-use, transparent solution,
which needs to work on more platforms than QPC.
This makes it even more difficult.

We are still using Stylus Color 740 and 900 together with QPC.
Both printers are rather old (4...5 years, maybe even older),
but print very well.
The Color 880 was the last model EPSON made which had the ESC/P2.
I also tried Canons, but recent models (SmartBase, or the brandnew

You can send whatever you like to them - they do not even react at

Why's that? What's error prone about this? And once you're used to
this, it's actually a piece of cake. Level 2 is especially nice
because it can update new versions of an application to the old
configuration. Very convenient.
Anyway, sorry for the dumb question, but isn't both Menu_rext and
MenuConfig provided on the QPC disc? I might be wrong, I don't put the
disc contents together and haven't seen an original disc in ages, but
I thought this was the case.
Menu_rext is not on the Q60 support discs for the same reasons, so I need
a copy to. Has there ever been a version of Sernet for non QL computers
and is there enough documentation in the public domain for anybody to
write one?
Well, Menu_rext is not freeware, to start with. Everybody is welcome
to bundle it with his product for a small royalty fee. This is how it
was in the past, and this will even apply to brandnew products like QDT.
Nobody has approached me to have it bundled on the Q40/Q60 support
disks, so it is no surprise it is not on there...
but everybody is welcome to ask!

And yes, it was not originally on the QPC disk as QPC did not have
Level 2 right from the start, if I remember correctly. And when it
had been implemented by Marcel, I simply forgot to add it.
Mind you, all of the QPC customers seem to have other products
containing menu, as there was not a single complaint over the years.
I remember very well that at this time, QPC1 was also on the disk
and it was completely full - we had to remove stuff.
Probably about time to deliver QPC2 on CD...

Dear DAvide,

Do you see him/speak to him? In this case, please let him
know that all mails to him bounce.

Re: [ql-users] Printers

2004-05-09 Thread SMSQ - Jochen Merz
Hi Ian,

Any suggestions about which colour
printer to choose?
Try to get an EPSON Stylus Color 900 or 980. They *DO* work.
They are fast. The ink is dead cheap.
Ebay is usually a good place to get them.

Re: [ql-users] Crumbs

2004-04-24 Thread SMSQ - Jochen Merz

So, I blame Wolfgang for writing that game and Jochen for selling it. It
seems to waste more time in this household than anything else. Still, if it
wasn't for The Wall she'd never use QPC2 so I should be grateful I suppose.
Glad you did not complain to your electricity company for delivering the
power :-And - thinking about it, it is REALLY the toast baker
you should complain to for the fact that the crumbs block the keyboard.
Cheers from Orlando,

[ql-users] Email problems

2004-04-10 Thread SMSQ - Jochen Merz
Hi everybody on the list,

I read about missing emails. Well, very strange things are going on.
I ran several tests with Wolfgang Lenerz, for example, and only 3 of 4
mails from Bruce arrived at j-m-s.com
Mails from some sources do not arrive at j-m-s.com at all, although
they are whitelisted (they don't get through if no spam filter is active
at all!).
SOMETHING in the world wide web is filtering mails (or throwing them
away) without notifying the sender.
This is reproduceable in some cases, in other cases it is random.
My provider has no clue either, but in the reproduceable cases the
sending server refuses to connect to the receiving server.
Fact is: it is unreliable and it is related to j-m-s.com (my main account).
I would guess that due to the massive number of faked virus mails (I get the
bounces, so I have an idea what is going on), j-m-s.com may be on some
internal black lists (I checked all public lists, not listed in any!).
Therefore, please send all mails to [EMAIL PROTECTED] for the time being!

If you have sent me mails during the last few weeks and you had no reply
(which would be unusual, as I tend to reply very quickly) then please send
it again, but to my .DE account!
Regards Jochen

NOT all bounces are actually that, One of the methods used Spoofs just
that, Bounces !
Of course, Bounces with a size 30k and ZIP attachments (or other
nice things) have to be Virus spoofs - but I get the full range :-(
Masses!!!
