John, Don, and Roy have all worked on my various tries at cabling,
generic (or the old) boxes, etc. at various US shows. Roy even took the
existing cable, took two pairs of four wires each and reversed them
relative to each other. Things worked better in ways that again I don't
remember, but never fully satisfactorily. Still couldn't format.
There were a few versions of SMSQ/E for the Gold Card which had
formatting problems. You had to issue direct instructions as to what the
disk was such as
FORMAT 'flp1_*D' for a DD disk and
FORMAT 'flp1_*H' for an HD one

That seems better in the later versions. Should not affect the native QL
system though. Yes I did twist the cable because you had two flp2_
drives together. You twist lines 10, 11, and 12 counting from the line
with the coloured stripe and by doing that you reverse the drive
allocation. Making flp2_ turn into flp1_ so to speak.

All PC drives come as flp2_ (DS1).

You are right. The majority do not have jumpers, but some still do.
Often the jumper is solder blob shorts on the pcb.

You should be able to find configurable drives, in which case a
straight-through cable is the thing (DS0 = flp1 DS2 = flp2).
ie the cable you already have.

If you have problems, try flp_jiggle 1 (GC and SGC)

What I would suggest is first to try a single drive - don't connect a second
drive, and see whether that works OK.

Older dricesn as used generally in the QL World, had jumpers to tellwhich
drive was flp21 or 2_.

Many of today's drives don't. They expect the cable to be twisted (which I
presume is why Roy did this).

However, if you first can ascertain that the drive works on its own (and the
same with the second drive) at least you know that this is the problem.
Then you can try to make up a correct cable.

Hope this helps.

[ql-users] FDD help? (Was: Visit to Switzerland)

2005-02-09 Thread extdgl42
Greetings once again from LurkLand. Can someone help with the following:

Does anyone have a pair of FDDs known to work (viz., for SGC and preferably GC
as well)? Or maybe I just need a cable that is twisted right or otherwise set
up right.

I cannot get my dual 3.5" FDD to work. Haven't been able to for some time. I
had a pair from long, long ago and far, far away that somehow stopped working
(maybe the latch pooped out on one; don't remember). I decided to try replacing
both with new generics and plug the cable from the Black Box back into the FDDs.

I remember they never worked right. E.g. I have never been able to format (and
previously could). I could take a disk full of files, delete one, and put my
new file in, but not start fresh via format. John, Don, and Roy have all worked
on my various tries at cabling, generic (or the old) boxes, etc. at various US
shows. Roy even took the existing cable, took two pairs of four wires each and
reversed them relative to each other. Things worked better in ways that again I
don't remember, but never fully satisfactorily. Still couldn't format.

So who has run into this before? "Should" I be able to get away with a pair of
generic boxes and a cable that is wired "right"? Or is that an iffy setup and
"should" I just get the full setup of a pair of boxes (yes, in one housing
maybe) and a cable all known already to work? Possibly would have to be in USA
given shipping $$.

I am looking to get a physical QL within shouting distance of "original" to do
a large part of my daily business. I am not ruling out the QPC I have; just
want use for my black box.

Hardware: SGC (also GC and Trump ~1M), in general original "black box"; 14.4
USR, Falkenberg, Hermes, Minerva, old Acorn RGWBlk monitor, Pxxx 24-pin
printer.

Thanks much,

I vaguely remember a picture and caption in IQLR magazine along the
lines of "Tony Firshman caught dangling his Minerva Mkii in public".
Now if that were to become a LapLink I'd start worrying ;-)
