I compiled qmail and vpopmail on redhat 7 the other day.
Worked great.

I don't use xinetd for anything. In fact I usually turn it off.
I use tcpserver to run smtp and pop.

Qmail runs fine on my system, but i'm not familiar with vpopmail.
Use tcpserver btw instead of the xinetd...
