I actually found that setting `full-log-dir=/tmp/spamdyke-logs` in the
`spamdyke.conf` file gave me quite a lot of actionable information. I
don't know if it's exactly the same as you'd get by using `SMTP_DEBUG`,
but I found it helpful.

What version of qmail are you using?
In the later versions, <=1.03-3.3.4, you can use SMTP_DEBUG to monitor
the SMTP transaction logged to a different file.

Answering my own question for the sake of posterity:
The issue turned out to be a timeout while handling TLS encrypted
connections. I was able to fix the problem by editing
`/etc/spamdyke/spamdyke.conf` to change:
