I *think* that this might be a bug in Mozilla. I ass-ume you're using the
WaMCom version (1.3.1)?

IIRC, I went through shades of the same thing in '04 when I lost my mind
(IMO) and signed up for gmail. It seemed that with Mozilla, if I downloaded
it and left it alone (i.e. did not disable cookies or mess about with any
of the cookies options), I could go to sites requiring cookies with no
problem.

In the case of gmail, though, I encountered the same problem you did. I had
selected the disable cookies option before faffing about with gmail. Even
after I enabled cookies and left the browser wide open, I still got the same
you need to enable cookies message. Rebooting the machine produced no
change. At that point, I simply decided that I was done fooling around with
gmail and wrote it off.

So has it come to the point where even an email list about vintage macs
requires OSX and the latest browser? If that is really the case, I'll be
 saying goodbye as well.

I dunno about the latest borwser bit. WaMCom Mozilla turns 3 years old in
July this year (if I'm not mistaken). In Internet terms, it's ancient.

As much as I enjoy wringing the most out my older hardware, it seems that
there's a point of diminishing returns. Me, I'm hoping I can use the WaMCom
Mozilla for another couple years, but I readily acknowledge that this might
be Wishful Thinking on my part because there are already some things I can't
do with it. :/

[q] Recovery Tools for a Quad 800?

2005-05-11 Thread James Fraser
Hello All,

I've got an old HD in an 800 that I'd like to recover, if possible.

Background: the drive is a 2-Gigger with OS 8.1 on it. However, I booted
after the HD failure using a 7.5.3 CD during my recovery efforts and would
have to use such a CD again to bring it up.

The problem began when the machine would boot sporadically (failing to
recognize the HD), then not at all. I somehow got it to boot again...and
promptly decided that this would be a great time to rebuild the desktop.

[holds head in hands]

Since I've gotten the self-flagellation bit out of the way long ago, I'd
like to get nominations for recovery tools for this. From what I can tell,
the recovery tools of choice for this would be:

1) DiskWarrior 2.1.1 Plus Optimizer 1.3
2) TechTool Pro 3.0.6 (or 2.5.5 for low RAM configurations; I have 40 megs
to play with)

I know that Norton is an option, too, but not a very desirable one from what
(little) I understand...

How 'bout it guys: any thoughts/opinions/general blather?

Best,

James Fraser
