Not really. Hot is the word you're looking for. Hot and very loud.

I have an old RAID cabinet in the garage. It's about 1m tall, 0.75m
deep and 0.2m wide and weighs 60-70kg or more. Contains 7 full height
5.25 SCSI HDs and 4 5.25 half height double-speed caddy-load
CD-ROMs. It needs to be connected to 2 SCSI buses simultaneously to
run.

When running, it used to hold my home fileserver's 7GB RAID5 array
plus the OS boot drive, and it not only put about 4% on my home
electricity bill all on its own, it sounded like a Harrier jumpjet
hovering outside the flat. It was virtually impossible to hold a phone
conversation when it was running. On the upside, I didn't need to heat
the flat...

a 9gig should work. I have a beatiful 9.1gig 50pin scsi drive that I
could sell, just email me off list (the quad is no longer working but
the drive is just so cool that I kept it). I would part with it quite
cheap but I warn that it is a full height 5-1/4 hard drive not one of
those dinky little 3.5 drives we are all used to...but really thats why
I think it is so cool and kept it around (also, it just has this aura of
*power* when it first spins up).

While a 9 GB capacity will work, the LC475 requires a 3.5 drive in
1/3 height or LP. A 5.25 drive will not fit in the case.

I'm guessing you have a Seagate Elite ST410800N. Those were nice
drives in their day, especially because they cost about $.40/MB back
when hard drives generally cost about $1.00/MB. But they're just
too large to fit in a Pizza Box Mac. I have one in a nice external
SCSI enclosure.

The LC475 will only accept a 3.5 inch harddrive.

yup, thats exactly the drive I was reffering too. I warned about it
being full height 5.25 but I guess I forgot to mention that it never
actually fit in my Q610 (it would have fit in the CD space if it were
half height). It's still a beatiful drive that came in a hotswap
fitting when I bought it that I always thought it would be cool to have
a RAID rack of them.

My Quadra 840 runs System 7.1 and has a 4GB hard drive. I am sure the
size of the clusters is quite large making it somewhat inefficient
for storage storage. It is use mostly to capture audio from my stereo
with the resulting files being fairly large so their is not
significant wasted space.

How big a drive do you want to use? Im not quite sure but i dont think
theres much of a limit. You could probably put in a 9GB. Is that big enough?
