[qubes-users] Dom0 entries have vanished from the applications menu.

2017-07-26 Thread filtrationisuseless
In the application menu, dom0 entries have disappeared, including the
logout options. All entries for AppVM, ServiceVM, and Templates remain.
This has happened to me before, but I don't know how to proceed.

XFCE builds these menus from .desktop files in locations like
~/.local/share/applications/ (mine has has only .desktop files for VMs)
and /usr/share/applications/ (which has none.) /var/lib/qubes/qubes.xml
mentions /var/lib/qubes/servicevms/dom0/, but that folder doesn't exist
on my system.

It looks like this happened right after I removed some templates with
the "$ sudo dnf remove " command. Terminal outputted some errors, but I
overlooked them and don't know if they would be in any logs.

Can anyone help me with this?

[qubes-users] Re: hidpi: How do AppVMs and Template/SysVMs get the screen dpi

2017-07-26 Thread tsadowski
Update

I changed Xft.dpi in /etc/X11/Xresources to a more reasonable value and this
solved most of the problems for Template/Sys-VMs. Firefox is still erratic and
DispVMs are still tiny. For some strange reason the Xresources don't find their
way into xrdb.

Cheers,
Torsten

https://github.com/QubesOS/qubes-issues/issues/1161

anyway...

amd ryzen need kernel 4.11+ and my graphic card need linux-firmware (amdgpu)
within the kernel.

is there a chance for me to build qubes with qubes-build
(https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/qubes-builder/) ?

do i get full upgrade iso? if i choose unstable template do i get latest kernel?

i plan to install fedora 26 minimal and build the iso and then install. any

If I am not wrong this problem should be fixed upgrading intel-microcode:

I don't how to upgrade it with Qubes/Xen. Probably it needs installing
some fedora package on dom0.

Try running

I seem to recall that Xen used to advise disabling hyperthreading, and
VMWare counsel against its use when provisioning vcpus.
In general there's no advantage in assigning more than physical cores to any VM.

On the specifics, I *think* that cpuinfo reports capabilities even if
they have been diabled, so that isnt an issue.

I dont see any issue in assigning multiple vcpus up to the number of
physical cores. I dont think that bug is relevant to the decision.

is anything that can be configured in dom0.

An idea could be to built a DVM template from the fedora-24-minimal
package, install perl-encode and look how fast the disp-vm will start.

I see the same thing with a Debian 9 template - but not with
an 8 that's been upgraded.

[qubes-users] Thunderbird 52.2.1 and Enigmail (1.8.2 in Debian 8/Jessie)

2017-07-26 Thread rob_66
Hi all.

This probably belongs to Whonix or Debian itself, but just to inform you
(and ask 1 question): Enigmail seems to stop working with the update to
Thunderbird/Icedove 52.2.1.

I just found this hint so far:
https://www.mail-archive.com/debian-user@lists.debian.org/msg718242.html

Did you find more?

Thanks, cheers,
Rob

Re: [qubes-users] dvm starting extremly slow -> guid

2017-07-26 Thread 'P R' via qubes-users
Hello,

Am 26.07.2017 2:18 vorm. schrieb "Qru" :

Then I noticed that starting a dvm takes really long (around 45 Seconds).
Before it was about 3 seconds, which is somehow acceptable. But 40 seconds?

I have also migrated all AppVMs to Fedora 25 and discovered the same
behavior.
Running the same command ...

To test it, I startet the dvm from the dom0-console:
[user@dom0 ~]$ sh - c 'echo firefox | usr/lib/qubes/qfile-daemon-dvm
qubes.VMShell dom0 DEFAULT red'

I discovered also that the startups stalls between

time=1500551221.46, qrexec done

... and ...

time=1500551271.78, guid done

Between qrexec done and guid done I loose ~40 seconds.

I made another test with a Fedora 23 based DVM by recreating the disposable
VM in dom0:

[user@dom0 ~]$ qvm-create-default-dvm fedora-23

After that launching the same command:

[user@dom0 ~]$ sh - c 'echo firefox | usr/lib/qubes/qfile-daemon-dvm
qubes.VMShell dom0 DEFAULT red'

Finishes in ~ 12 seconds, so the problem with the slow bootup seems to be
somewhere in the Fedora 25 Template.

Any idea where to look further and was is happening exactly between "qrexec
done" and "guid done"?

- PhR

No, you are right.

Seems we just lost that group somewhere...
@Marek do you have any idea about what happened?
