Okay, thanks for the help.
Sounds like this computer will be a good first Qubes OS computer for me to
learn on then.

It's functional.

As per all PC's, you will have crashes every now and again because they use
SystemD instead of SysV.

Which is why I have been trying to get a Slackware version working properly,
but still tough to convert everything to get it installed and working.

If you remember to kill off the QubesVM Manager every now and again, as well as
pause your guests (Fedora based) when you are going AFK overnight or for a
while, then that will lessen the amount of crashes you will have.

I use an HP 4650b with Qubes, and that functions fine with 8 GB RAM and a Quad
Core i7.

Since it had Win7 on it, you can install Win7 into a Guest, then register using
your key. So that is one good thing.

I run Qubes on a lot of older hardware as well as some not so old hardware.

My PC that I run it on has 24 GB RAM and a hyperthreaded Hex Core Xeon.

And I have this thing loaded to bare. I run 15+ Guests most of the time.
That includes 1 NetVM and 2 ProxyVMs.

My PC only locks every now and again when I have something that is built into
Qubes go haywire.

Don't run FF under Fedora and leave it for the weekend. That will lock things
up if you have too many things open.
Close the Qubes Manager When you are going away overnight even. My Qubes
Manager, when I boot starts about 1 GB RAM. After a day, it's used 75% of the
Dom0 RAM. When it hits 80% or more, it generally locks the PC and I have to
force a restart by powering off, not shutting down cleanly.

So if you base your Laptop off the PC that I use and how hard I run it, you can
get an idea of what you could do with your Laptop and the stability.

My 4thread laptop with 8 GB RAM. I can typically run 4-5 guests without hastle.
XEN is very good at management that way. NetVM and ProxyVM running with only
512MB RAM, 1 thread max. so that leaves 7GB for everything Else. I have my Dom0
set to 2 GB RAM. So that leaves 5 for Guests.
I customised my Laptop version for maximum efficiency since it's not the
workhorse my Desktop is. It's just a portable version for general work.

My Desktop runs with 5 monitors at times. Generally I just run 2-3 depending on
what I am doing and how much I am working on. I have it set for 7 virtual
desktops.

I have my own person self-built Qubes Suite working and doing most of the
things I need it to do.
Typically I have about 80 windows open at any one time on a slow day.

Hope that this information is useful for you.

Why do you all have to change from Xen to Cirrus in the config?

I use XEN as my video. And I have no issue with many graphical things now.

Only time I have issues is when I try to start the Windows Guest when I'm
running 5 monitors. As long as I start it with only 1, then proceed to add the
rest, it's fine. But I've said all this before so I swill not repeat it all
over again.

But that's the only real issue I have with the video side of it.

So I am just curious as to why so many people I see are having to change to
Cirrus from XEN?

The issues people have are not existant in that github post.

All you have to do is create a template and load the iso/dvd in and perform the
install.

During the install, make sure to say LET ME CHOOSE LATER when it asks you about
windows updates otherwise you will encounter the memory leak in wusa.

If you are running Qubes 3.2, not an RC, then it will run seamless and near
perfect for Windows 7.

I run Windows 1 through Windows 8 perfectly. Windows 7 is the only one that I
run Seamless though, because the tools are not designed for any other version
(at this time)

This happens with Windows HVM if you install a version of the tools with the
bug, version pre 3 or 3.0.2 or later (unless resolved)
If you are running multiple monitors this will also occurr.

> If I start the VM without Seemless GUI, it only goes on with debug mode on,

If this happens then that means you have not got it turned off in the TEMPLATE?
Run the qvm-prefs on the template and the appvm.

If seamless is on in the template, then the appvm will have seamless whether or
not you want it on or off.

If it isn't in the template, then you need to run the "qvm-sync-appmenus" on
the template.
If it is not a template then it will not run.

Otherwise, you can get the menu editor and add in your own shortcuts, instead
of using their method that does not work correctly for Windows. (Nothing ever
works right for Windows)

[qubes-users] Re: Several issues

2017-08-17 Thread Drew White
4. Qubes VM Manager is still getting worse..
  - I updated, and the RAM usage for it went through the roof.
  - After not long it consumed 90% of Dom0 RAM availability.

  - You have a memory leak in it somewhere, or else it isn't cleaning up the
trash properly.
  - I only have 27 templates, 13 standalone, 31 app vms, 5 proxy vm, 3 netvm.

  - What is it that is happenning in the manager to cause it to consume so much
RAM?
>- I am NOT running the graphs for CPU or RAM over time, so that's one
issue that should not be there.

5. Firewall rules need to be able to be turned off/on at will, still having
them in the list is good, but being able to turn them off when one needs to,
would be an advantage.
   - e.g. I have 12 rules. I want 10 active all the time and 2 to be able to be
turned on and off when I need them to be on.
   - Just simple check box's would be good.

6. The Manager has this stupid "enter the machine name to delete" when I try to
delete a guest. I clicked the remove vm for a reason, a simple confirmation
dialogue would suffice.
   - Add in a ADVANCED USER feature that I suggested a year ago.

Yes it will run it, and quite well.

How "safe" do you want to be?
What "safe" are you referring to?
  - Crashing?
  - Locking?
  - Malware?
  - Hackers?

[qubes-users] Several issues

2017-08-17 Thread Drew White
Hi folks,

been a while since I have been here because there have not been many issues I
could not overcome or workaround easily.

There have been a few issues recently that I have no workaround for.

1. The restoration utility.
  - Instead of being thinly allocated, the images are now thick.
  - Where they used to take up 7 GB on a 60GB maximum image, they now consume
the full 60 GB when restored.

2. The USB-VM causes my laptop to have no USB available to it apart from the
keyboard and mouse that are built in.
  - I can't see any other things.
  - Everything that is plugged in turns on then turns off and then is
unaccessable via the usb-vm.
  - When there is no usb-vm everything works properly through dom0.

3. I can't install SysV init. I don't want SystemD. If I wanted windows I would
use Windows instead of Linux.
  - Has anyone got a successful Slackware version running yet please?

Or can a netVM not have its own netVM?

Thank you very much Yethal!

Yes, it resolved my graphics issues. I am now able to run Qubes with
VT-d enabled. :-)

I am also able to assign the USB controller to the Windows HWM! :-)

That means I can use USB either exclusively in the Windows HWM or via
sys-usb with all the other AppVMs and an external mouse. That's a
compromise I can live with.

Again, thank you. I could have used a second laptop running windows to
capture data, but this is far more convenient.

I appear to have this same problem as well. Ethernet works, but after
suspend wifi breaks. It looks like it's this issue:
https://github.com/QubesOS/qubes-issues/issues/3008

If it's R3.2 and you're using SeaBIOS, check out the last paragraph of
https://github.com/QubesOS/qubes-issues/issues/2553#issuecomment-284367521

For 4.0rc1 there's currently also some issue with the iommu=no-gfx boot
option. Try removing that.

Other than that we'd need more info for support.

One of the pages
has a
schedule. I believe there are 5 weeks between release candidates with a
maximum of 3 candidates. So that would be 15 weeks before stable? RC1 was
July 31st. So stable could be November 13th at the latest? This is my best
guess.

[qubes-users] latest qubes update cause network problems

2017-08-17 Thread Kolja Weber
Hello,

at first: thanks for the great work on qubes, it is amazing.

i discover since the last update on 3.2 problems with my network in case
i suspend my T550 to ram. All VMs wake up fine including the network VM
but it doesent reconize any wlan (no networks show up), lan not tested yet.

Vm restart doesent solve it, only way to get it back is a full reboot.
Any changes in the xen kernel related to wlan driver?

[qubes-users] Noobish Question about Language config.

2017-08-17 Thread Finsh
Hello Guys,

i have a noobish Question.I installed Qubes on a PC with english keyboard
layout, and then put the Harddrive in one with a Germany layout.I wan the
system Language to be english(ts German now) , but the Keyboard Layout to be
German.

so i simply changed the Keyboard settings with the System Tools and the
systemlanguage with the command line:

as root:
nano /etc/locale.conf
LANG="en_US.utf-8"
source /etc/locale.conf

However, when i boot the system, i still have to type The diskpassword and
usser-pw with an English Layout for the first time, and the systemtools Menü is
still German.
Is it because i only change the language for root? How do i change it for
non-privileged user ?

[qubes-users] HCL - Thinkpad T430

2017-08-17 Thread AnDee Lim
Hello Qubes Team,

Awesome work so far!

I had issues with the official USB/DVD installer, tried everything, UEFI,
no UEFI, disabling virtualization etc. Finally installer worked when I used
the Fedora livecd generator discussed here instead.

https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/qubes-users/4VsKdxnKHBk

Other than installation, everything works near perfectly!

nota bene - thinkpad CPU is non-default, upgraded to i7-3632QM

Hope this helps!
