[qubes-users] Qubes OS 4.0.2-rc3 has been released!

2019-12-13 Thread Andrew David Wong
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA512

Dear Qubes Community,

We're pleased to announce the third release candidate for Qubes 4.0.2!

Features:
- - All 4.0 dom0 updates to date
- - Fedora 30 TemplateVM
- - Debian 10 TemplateVM
- - Whonix 15 Gateway and Workstation TemplateVMs
- - Linux kernel 4.19 by default

Qubes 4.0.2-rc3 is available on the Downloads page:

https://www.qubes-os.org/downloads/

What is a point release?

A point release does not designate a separate, new version of Qubes OS.
Rather, it designates its respective major or minor release (in this
case, 4.0) inclusive of all updates up to a certain point. Installing
Qubes 4.0 and fully updating it results in the same system as installing
Qubes 4.0.2.

What should I do?
=

If you installed Qubes 4.0 or 4.0.1 and have fully updated [1], then
your system is already equivalent to a Qubes 4.0.2 installation. No
further action is required.

Regardless of your current OS, if you wish to install (or reinstall)
Qubes 4.0 for any reason, then the 4.0.2 ISO makes this more convenient
and secure, since it bundles all Qubes 4.0 updates to date.

*Note:* At 4.5 GiB, the Qubes 4.0.2-rc3 ISO will not fit on a
single-layer DVD (for the technical details underlying this, please see
issue #5367 [2]). Instead, we recommend copying the ISO onto a
sufficiently large USB drive. [3] However, if you would prefer to
use optical media, we suggest selecting a dual-layer DVD or Blu-ray disc.

Release candidate planning
==

If no major issues are discovered in 4.0.2-rc3, we expect the stable
release of 4.0.2 to follow in a few weeks. As usual, you can help by
[reporting any bugs you encounter][reporting-bugs].

Re: [qubes-users] Qubes booting in machine with Windows and Linux

2019-12-13 Thread robertlehamn
I tried doing what you mentioned. It seems that I can either boot to Qubes
OR Grub where I can choose between Linux and Windows. I would like the
Qubes boot manager to control everything so when I start the computer, I
can choose between the 3 OSes. What do I need to put into either Grub or
Qube's configuration file to do this? I've looked up and tried different
lines of code with no success, but I have no coding experience. Thanks for
your help.

Re: [qubes-users] Re: How do I attach a hard drive to a VM on boot?

2019-12-13 Thread billollib
No, it's been consistent for a few weeks now, so I'm not going to worry
about it. I did find another way to screw up, though. I attached the
drive persistently to my "untrusted" VM, and then put the mount in
/etc/fstab in the debian-10 template, so it would persist also. That
worked fine for the untrusted VM, but none of the other debian-based VMs
would start, since they couldn't mount /dev/sda3. Sigh. So, now I have to
figure out how to add that to the fstab just for "untrusted." I saw some
instructions, involving adding an echo command to an rc script, but haven't
tried it yet.

[qubes-users] UEFI black screen stall

2019-12-13 Thread Master Node
Hey I recently made a post about x start up failing, I'm thinking this was from
trying to run a raid configuration between two m2 drives in a sata adapter
case. After I stopped doing that I have not seen the same error.

Now I am onto another problem and can just taste qubes os finally working again
lol, this problem happens after install reboot, everything goes good untill it
hits the finaly boot up and goes to a black screen and freezes, I have tried to
do the

mapbs=1
noexitboot=1

Work around adding it under both kernels when I reboot it doesnt do anything
and I get the same black screen.

If you are a pro at qubes you can msg me direct as well and i have no problem
throwing you some money if you can expediate my head aches. Or you can comment
here as well both work either way.

Re: [qubes-users] Re: X Startup Failed

2019-12-13 Thread Claudia

Master Node:

I will try to not top post iv read how it's done but it does not seem to have
worked on my last msg, I dont see any other way to rely and I'm replying to the
last msg of this thread.

My intel cpu is a i7-4930MX with haswell gpu integrated. As I said before my
whole system worked amazing before the DGPUs died on me, they were actually 2
different gpus to one was a gtx 675m and the other I can not figure out what it
is as of yet. But this is pretty interesting that qubes worked perfect on 2
different nvidia gpus and now wont work on the integrated intel gpu. All the
bios settings are right but x startup fails.

Okay, now we're getting somewhere, but you still haven't answered half
of my questions.

Are you doing the reinstall with the exact same Qubes version (ISO) that
worked before? What version?

This error is happening when you try to boot the installer itself (from
USB), correct?

Did you try "nomodeset", or the failsafe boot option? The noveau options
probably have no effect, since you don't have any Nvidia cards at this
point.

It would be helpful to see the exact X log/error, even if you just take
a picture of it with your phone or something.

Also, please try to reply to the actual message you're replying to, not
just the last message in the thread, and keep relevant portions of the
quoted thread. If you want to reply to two different users/messages,
write two separate replies. Just some friendly advice.

[qubes-users] Re: Has anybody gotten increased scrutiny at an international checkpoint because of having qubes installed?

2019-12-13 Thread billollib

Yeah, there are ways to fake an OS, but that really wasn't my question. I
was wondering whether or not folk have noticed that having an OS like Qubes
would result in greater scrutiny than Windows or MacOS. I'm not trying to
sneak anything across the border; I just don't want to spend an extra two
hours at the airport.

[qubes-users] Re: Qubes not Loading

2019-12-13 Thread billollib

I think that you are not supposed to use one of those make-a-bootable-drive
apps. Instead, as I remember, you just dd the thing onto the usb and plug
it in. See:

https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/installation-guide/

Look at the section "Copying the ISO onto the installation medium"

When I first tried doing Qubes, I did the same thing. I installed it using
one of the usb writer apps, and couldn't figure out why it didn't work.

No, when that happens (as it does with everyone who replies-all to my

I see this too. I've seen it on qubes-devel also. I guess the problem is

I'm not sure if those apply to legacy mode.

Try pressing f12 repeatedly during startup, about when you see "Loading
initial ramdisk..." in grub. This should get rid of the graphical splash
screen and switch to console output. Take note of the last few lines on
the screen when it freezes. Alternatively you can remove "rhgb quiet"
from the command line in grub.

Is the whole system frozen, or just the screen? Does the light turn
on/off when you press caps lock, for example? If you press
ctrl-alt-delete does it power off after some time?

I recently had the same problem, where Qubes 4.0.2 would screen freeze
during boot. I went through the above steps and eventually found
"nomodeset" to work around the problem, due to a bug in the amdgpu
driver. Other people with my same laptop found that "iommu=soft" kernel
option would allow the amdgpu driver to load without freezing, at least
on regular non-qubes non-xen linux. I don't know if/how kernel iommu
options work in Qubes.

If you're using Qubes version earlier than 4.0, make sure to add
iommu=no-igfx to the Xen command line.
