[qubes-users] DisposableVM Help

2020-07-11 Thread Robert Spigler
I have a debian-10-dvm and a whonix-ws-15-dvm. I also had a fedora-30-dvm,
but when upgrading to fedora-32, I followed "Creating a New DisposableVM
Template" here: (https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/disposablevm-customization/),
so no longer have the fedora-30-dvm. Instead, I have a
custom-disposablevm-template based on fedora-32. I would prefer to rename
this to fedora-32-dvm-template, but renaming fails with 'Failed to clone
appmenus'.

My main question/problem is that unlike the debian-10-dvm and
whonix-ws-15-dvm, opening an application in fedora-32-dvm-template does not
open a disposableVM (disp), instead it opens
'custom-disposablevm-template'. IIUC, that is because I am supposed to
create fedora-32-dvm from the dvm-template. But I cannot figure out how to
do that. It is set as the default disposableVM template, so opening files
through the GUI in a disposableVM will open them in a disposableVM based on
fedora-32, but I would still like to be able to open an application through
the GUI/start menu in a fedora-32-dvm.

What I am also having trouble understanding is what dvm-template is the
debian-10-dvm and whonix-ws-15-dvm based on? I know Qubes4.0 introduced
multiple DVMTemplates, but I don't see any other DVMTemplates listed under
the start menu. In Qubes Manager, debian-10-dvm and whonix-ws-15-dvm are
marked as being their own DVMTemplates? But also DVM's themselves?

Thank you,

Robert

I also have the same board. UEFI works on 4.1, but has never worked on
4.0 for me.

This is the only TPM on this board. It's a firmware TPM built into all
Ryzen processors. Sadly, there is an ACPI based bug which causes the
wrong IO memory location to be provided to the Linux kernel. I have an
(exceptionally dirty) patch which gets it working, but it looks like the
patch I built that from will never make it upstream. Work on it has been
stalled for nearly a year.

[qubes-users] Squares instead of Characters in (?)nautilus

2020-07-11 Thread Alex Lu
When I try to do anythings that opens "Open Folder" window, I see only
squares instead of characters. https://i.imgur.com/YdXpIWW.png

This behavior began after I moved from fedora-31 to fedora-32-minimal
template. I already deleted the previous vm, so I couldn't even check if
there is something I need to have installed to make it work correctly.

Nautilus itself works fine, though.

[qubes-users] vCPUs count over-booking

2020-07-11 Thread Claudio Chinicz
Hi,

I noted that my sum total of vCPUs is larger than the actual number of vCPUs.

Maybe Xen works at the minimum in order to keep sum total of vCPUs within
limits?

One thing I tried was to disable VT-x and then HVMs (min and max vCPUs is the
same) would not start.

Any ideas of how Xen manages vCPUs within the limits of the processor?

Regards

[qubes-users] HCL - ASRock-X399-Taichi

2020-07-11 Thread jacobeus via qubes-users
Submission of hardware information from qubes-hcl-report.

Qubes 4.0, Grub install. IOMMU install I haven't gotten to work yet - will
report again if I ever do. Currenly reports that there is no TPM found, but
this motherboard has a huge number of settings that could possibly change both
issues. AMD has an "fTMP" which can be enabled/disabled from the BIOS settings,
but unclear if this simply a subtype of TPMs or a wholly different thing.

Correction: I meant UEFI install, not IOMMU. I can't brain today, apparently.
IOMMU works and can be enabled from the BIOS settings as well.
BIOS-compatibility mode is enabled by default and is necessary to perform the
install.

Needs published EFI workaround to boot, Nvidia workaround not to

not work at all, but might be broken hardware. Touchpad palm suppression
stinks, and the "Fn-f9" key to turn the touchpad off doesn't work; I had
to bind a script to "WIN-f9" to turn it off before I could type without
the cursor jumping around all the time. External-monitor config is not
remembered from one connection to the next, and always prefers
60Hz/reduced-resolution over 30Hz/full-resolution. I had to configure
enough RAM for two displays, in X, manually. Alcor Micro AU6621 MMC/SD
slot did not work with 4.x kernels, but works under a 5.x kernel. Camera
works. Intel 7265 wifi needs non-free "iwl" firmware. Have not tried
Bluetooth. Suspend/resume works. "Fn" screen brightness, volume control
keys work. Have not tried the Nvidia GM107/960M GPU. M.2 NVMe works.

Re: [qubes-users] Squares instead of Characters in (?)nautilus

2020-07-11 Thread Oleg Artemiev
I don't use qubes currently, but my 5 cents:
1. missing fonts or incorrect locale settings. Having said that I guess you
may fix this in two ways:
 a) set locale (LC_*, LANG variables) according to your language in shell
files in app VM in bashrc (or in template VM in /etc),
 b) install missing fonts in template VM.
2. Alternatively you may download the non-minimal template VM and use it
instead - minimal VMs may miss fonts for your locale, using non-minimal VM
may help.
