I have run into the same problem for backups when switching to qubes 4.0 and
found this workaround:
# a file cannot be attached if it is in directory /var/lib/qubes/appvms, so
create a link first

I have started using qubes 4.0 only recently and I ran into an issue I can't
seem to find a solution for.
I need to setup a PenTest Lab and I have already installed Kali and Win7 with
no issues. However, I am unable to install WinXP and I get the following error:
