Thank you for the advice. I managed to recover 1 private image, the rest was
salvageable, for whatever reason. (Even VMs that hadn't been started for days,
so there must've been another issue than the one I mentioned; because if not,
the only other conclusion I see is that btrfs is bizarrely fragile.)

I LOVE the disp feature and use it fairly often for random browsing,
but, I miss a few addons. I managed to add them to my template (which I
am think might be bad op/sec juju) but even then, when a new addon comes
out the browser updates so I have to update the addon manually in the
template which is a PITA that is quickly becoming not worth it.

Yeah, that's the downside of dispVMs.

My workflow for updating my profile is:

1- every now and then I start a dedicated appVM where my "master"
firefox profile/folder lives, in order to update addons, tweak prefs, ...

2- I then copy the folder to the dispVM's *dvm* template (not the dvm
template's template). I assume you're on R4.0 - IIRC for R3.2 you'd have
to update the template itself.

It seems to be pretty much what you did though. It doesn't take too much
time but then I update my profile every month or so - maybe your addons
require more frequent updates.

You could try to automatize the process with a script in dom0 that would
start the VMs, `qvm-run` commands, copy files, ...

Another way would be to skip updating the dvm template (step 2 above)
and instead copy the updated profile to one of your VMs that is always
started (or to dom0, provided you don't open/read any of these files).
You could then write a qubes extension [1] that automatically sync the
dispVM profile with the "master" one when a dispVM starts.

[qubes-users] Additional USB controllers for a laptop expresscard to PCI-slots

2018-10-19 Thread Franz
What do you think, will something like this be able to add more usb
controllers to a laptop?

https://www.integrate-computer.de/Exsys-EX-1015-ExpressCard-Bus-to-4-x-PCI-Slot-compact-Expansion-Box
This is reported to be linux compatible.

The idea is to add a USB keyboard to a laptop using a PCI USB controller,
perhaps using another slot for an audio card or whatever.

Having a separate keyboard will also allow to add an external monitor,
making home use more comfortable for eye strain now that e-ink monitors are
getting available.

But may Qubes architecture be able to assign these additional cards to
specific VMs even if they are connected by an Expresscard?

This is pretty common. It means that you did some loop in the network
configuration like:
sys-vpn -> sys-firewall -> sys-vpn

when you edit the default netVM you change many VM's at same time so
is likely to produce a loop (which three or more VM's involved). Check
exactly wich VM's will be affected and try to avoid the loop.

In my opinion this default value should be only used for new vm
creation, this way it is error prone, you can easily change the netVM
of a VM you didn't expect or restore a VM on a different machine (with
different default) and don't think about it...

[qubes-users] How to correctly install AMD graphic driver on Qubes?

2018-10-19 Thread entiosis via qubes-users
Is there a guide (step by step, the more detailed the better) similar to the
Nvidia driver installation guide found in Qubes user documentation for AMD
graphic driver installation? I was not able find any helpful threads on Qubes
reddit, Qubes users google group, nor in Qubes documentation. Is there someone
who could help me with tips and info (easy, specific, understandable to a
newbie) on how to go about installing AMD GPU driver?

For the sake of argument, I choose to trust AMD’s driver to be safe in order to
make use of the GPU.

The driver should be installed in dom0 (Nvidia guide explains), I attempted at
downloading the AMD driver tar.xz file and move it from my VM to dom0 (with the
idea of unpacking and do normal install by following the guide on AMD homepage)
with the command described in Qubes documentation; “Copy from (and to) dom0”.
Here I face the first problem; how to get the syntax correctly? I’m
unsuccessful in doing so. What am I doing wrong with the syntax and what other
considerations/approaches/preparations should I make in order to get the file
to dom0? If at all this is the right way to do it.

Example: dom0 username: Iceland, VM name: personal
[Iceland@dom0 ~] $ qvm-run --pass-io personal ‘cat
/home/user/Documents/amdgpu-pro-18.30-641594.tar.xz’ >
/home/Iceland/amdgpu-pro-18.30-641594.tar.xz

System OS: Qubes R4.0, Processor Ryzen 7 1700x, GPU Asus Radeon RX 580

I’m stuck, lost and in need of help. I really want to use - and learn how to
use - Qubes on my desktop computer. I’m determined to make Qubes my home.
Please help me fly :-)

'domain-start' event is called on VM object, so it should not have
system=True. system=True is needed for events on Qubes() main object
itself, like property-set:default_template.

> def on_vm_start(self, app, event, vm, **kwargs):

For system=False events, it should be:
  def on_vm_start(self, vm, event, **kwargs):

If you need to access app, you can still do that through vm.app.

Hi!:) Thanks for the information. Do you have irс? Because of stupid mails, you
have to write here with thousands of different accounts, I think it would be
more convenient to communicate there.

I have been using Qubes on laptops for three years and apart from creating
firmware, nothing can be done about it. Decided to collect a workstation on
your advice (x220, coreboot/heads)

I want to use virtualization at full capacity

Advise the video card?

Is it RX580?

I just bought :

2x CPU AMD-OPTERON-16-Core-6276 ~80 bucks :))
ASUS KGPE-D16 - 170 bucks

will she make noise at home?

I have a passive cooling of the house, radiators - is it good idea?

Is it hard to attach a video card to hvm?

I am installing it myself at home, I work in a data center, and for example I
was surprised when I found out that the motherboard Supermicro has the same spi
chipsets (winbond, micron, macronix)

how much memory is needed for the first time? 32-64gb?

Fucking IBM (Power9) is too expensive.
last hope is ASUS KGPE-D16.

Thanks :))
