About the initial question. Iknow 4gb should be enough but it only
worked after setting the max value to 8GB.

Re: [qubes-users] HVM Creation - immediate shutdown after boot

2018-11-29 Thread pieter lems
Hello max,
I think i know the answer to both questions but if there is something wrong
please correct me. (to the people that know a lot about qubes)
Regarding your first question. The download did indeed fail because there
was not enough disk space on your qube. I've had the same problem multiple
times but increasing the available disk space should solve the problem.
This can be done by increasing the private storage size in the qubes
settings manager.
As far as i know is the /rw folder the folder which is persistent after a
restart of the qube. The rw folder contains configuration files concerning
the specific qube. Did you maybe point the iso download to the rw folder?
this could be the reason why its 100% full.

Regarding your second question, Ive had the same problem while installing a
kali iso. Increasing the max memory to 8GB solved the problem for me. This
can be done under the advanced tab in the qubes settings manager.
I hope some of this info can help you out.
Goodluck!

Hi Chris,
Yes ive been used V4 for a long time and I literally had 0 problems while
using it as daily driver. I switched to 4.0.1 and the only problem i had as
of now was backing up qubes but this was code related and has been fixed
already. :)

[qubes-users] Keeping your QubesOS clean

2018-11-26 Thread pieter lems
Hello everyone,
I was wondering what the best way is to keep your Qubes system clean.
Currently I'm running bleachbit on each different qube weekly. This seems
kind of inconvenient tho. Is there someone that has a better way of doing
this?
Thanks in advance!

Re: [qubes-users] alternative to bloated templates for faster work and minimal boot time/resources used

2018-11-26 Thread pieter lems
Hello Chris,
I was wondering, if i run a qube based on a fedora template it uses about
3.5GB of memory when just browsing. I decreased it to 2500 and it works
exactly the same. Will there be any negative effects by decreasing the
memory manually?
Thanks for the info btw!

[qubes-users] Custom dom0 wallpaper (a kind of guide)

2018-11-20 Thread pieter lems
Hello everyone,
Today I was customizing my QubesOS and I was running into a few problems
trying to change the dom0 wallpaper. I got it to work eventually and I
wanted to share how I did it. It's not safe to copy any files to dom0 but i
found that it's necessary to be able to use a custom wallpaper. (I'm sorry
if this is not the case). I did find a way to do this in a "sort of" secure
way, removing possible malware embedded in the image.

- First find an image you like to use as a wallpaper and download it.
- Open it using a disposable vm.
- Select full screen in the image viewer and take a screenshot.
- Save the screenshot in dom0
- Copy the screenshot to a trusted VM by using the command :

qvm-copy-to-vm

- Open the image in an image editor and cut the top border
- Save the image and copy it back to the backgrounds folder in dom0 by
using the command:

qvm-run --pass-io 'cat /path/to/file_in_src_domain' | sudo
tee /usr/share/backgrounds

And voila the wallpaper is in dom0. You can change it by right
clicking on your desktop and selecting desktop settings and then point
the folder to backgrounds

Again sorry if this is not the correct way.

cheers!

[qubes-users] How can I remove the GUI when booting qubes

2018-11-20 Thread pieter lems
Hello everyone,
First of all i would like to start of thanking the Qubes developers. I've
been using QubesOS for around a month right now and i cannot wish for more.
It's insane how much work you've put into the development of the OS and
that you've come so far.

I was wondering how i can make it so that when qubes is starting i see the
boot information (the output of the boot progress,im not sure how i should
call it). I know that when u press a key it shows the output but i would
like that it always shows. No offence to the GUI tho!

Thanks in advance,
Cheers!

Re: [qubes-users] Costum qubes order in QVM

2018-11-10 Thread pieter lems
Thanks for the response and sorry for the late response back. Concerning
the question, How didn't i think of that -_-! Thank you for mentioning
this. I've been using qube colors for my qube order. It works pretty well
if you get used to it.

For anyone wanting to use my method, the order of the qube colors is as
follows:
black ( i use it for my templates)
purple ( for sys qubes ex. sys-whonix)
blue ( for disposable vm's)
The rest of the colors can be used for whatever you like , but i use the
red one for qubes which are not connected to a netVM (ex. vault and db vm)
grey
green
yellow
orange
red

cheers!

Re: [qubes-users] Where is Chrome once installed?

2018-11-09 Thread pieter lems
Did you install chrome in a template VM? If yes select the AppVM (in which
you want to use chrome) in the qube-manager and edit the settings so that
the AppVm uses chrome.
Hope this helps. Otherwise check out the tasks at the bottom of the page at

I don't mean this in a bad way but isn't 4.0.1 a testing release? if you
are using qubes for important things you should stick with 4.0 as of now.
(it's also mentioned in the release notes) Devs are no wizards. :)
I hope you get it working.

[qubes-users] Cant restore backup Qubes4.0.1-rc1

2018-11-07 Thread pieter lems
Hello everyone. I've been working with Qubes4.0.1-rc1 since its release and
i haven't encountered any problems yet. Today I tried to restore a backup
but everytime the error message: "failed to decrypt
var/tmp/restore2su_c2ze/qubes.xml.000.enc: b'scrypt: Passphrase is
incorrect\n' " keeps popping up. I'm 100% sure the password is correct
since I changed it a couple of times to be only one letter.
I've also tried a solution offered in previous problem which is kind of
simmilar as mine.
In usr/lib/python3.5/site-packages/qubesadmin/backup/core3.py at line 134
change it to:
vm.label = vm.properties.pop('label')
Try:
Vm.label=self.labels[vm.label]
Except KeyError:
Pass

This didn't fix the issue sadly.
Is there someone that knows what te problem is.
Thanks in advance,
Pieter Lems

[qubes-users] Donating to qubes

2018-11-02 Thread pieter lems
Hello again everyone. I'm sorry for posting for the second time today but i
have a question related to qubes donations. I know it's possible to donate
by using ur credit card and by using bitcoin. The question is as follows:
Are there any other options available for donating such as paypal or IDeal
(for people from Holland)? If not is it possible to create those options
for people that either dont use a credit card or are not familliar with
bitcoins?
Thanks again in advance.

Re: [qubes-users] Install Qubes on a specific partition ?

2018-08-29 Thread pieter lems
sorry pretty new to this google groups,
again yes its possible. you should be carefull since dual booting can
comprimes security in some ways. (read the qubes docs for more info)
when installing just select the 100gb parition en select clear space and it
should work. Again i would recommend to instal it on another drive if your
dual booting. im planning on creating a tut, if you want it , it should be
online in like a week or 2.

Okay so I just found out what the problem was.
My Virtualisation Technology wasn't enabled in my BIOS. I hope this post can
help other people with the same problem.

[qubes-users] HP Spectre X360 13-ae010nd QubesOS installation problem: HAP/SLAT/EPT/RVI not supported

2018-05-26 Thread pieter lems
Good afternoon,
First of all my appoligies if my english is not 100% correct.

Secondly,
When I tried to install QubesOS V4 it gave me an error message saying that
my hardware lacks the features required to procceed. The error was about my
hardware missing HAP/SLAT/EPT/RVI support.
After doing some research I came to the conlussion that my hardware does
support the listed requirements. My CPU is an Intel i7-8550U wich according
to the Intel website supports all the needed features see here:
https://ark.intel.com/products/122589/Intel-Core-i7-8550U-Processor-8M-Cache-up-to-4_00-GHz

after that I installed a tool called Coreinfo to check wether my CPU
supported SLAT wich it does.
So right now I'm a little bit hazey on what to do. below you can see a
picture of the results.

Im sorry if it's my fault for not understanding correctly but i really want
qubes to work on my device. I hope i provided enough information. Thanks in
advance
