[qubes-users] Re: lenovo t400 will qubes work with lenovo's bios?

2018-01-02 Thread James Goodwin
I'm running a Lenovo T420 with Qubes 4.0 RC3, and it's working fantastically.

Qubes HCL Report says hvm, I/O MMU, HAP/SLAT, TPM, and Remapping all working.

Sometimes it will report differently, but that's due to an incomplete xl dmesg.
Not sure why it's incomplete, but everything is working fine.

The /var/lib/qubes directory is supposed to contain information pertaining to
all appvms, servicevms, updates, backup data, dvmdata, qubes.xml, and
vm-kernels/vm-templates, but mostly stores the icon.png files for each vm
except for vm-kernels directory which has the initramfs, modules.img, and
vmlinuz files as well as a modules directory.

Have you checked your journalctl log to see exactly what happened, and if it's
directly related to the act of cleaning?.

Maybe someone can offer more help, but personally, I'd re-install Qubes
(because I'd have no clue how to remedy the situation).

[qubes-users] secure hardware after purchase but before qubes installation

2017-09-01 Thread James Miller
For those that run Qubes on an off the shelf computer, did you go through any
special steps to insure the hardware was clean after you purchased, but before
you installed qubes? I'm about to buy new hardware for my installation and I'm
thinking of all the places in the purchase chain where a laptop could be
compromised. Does anyone have advise on how to not become the one in a million
person to get a laptop with compromised hardware? For example:
Do I need to replace any parts just in case?
Do I need to buy in person or directly from the manufacturer on line?

Re: [qubes-users] Network setup - TORVM-VPNVM

2017-08-19 Thread james . buttler1975
So I want to have 2 different types of system

One where it goes through tor and then through vpn so that websites don't see I
am using tor

So that would need to be whonix WS -> whonix GW -> VPN VM -> net vm

And a seperate system that just uses tor

Which would just be

Whonix WS -> whonix GW -> net VM

If I open two of the above App vms would echo app vm connect to appear as two
seperate IPs?

Am I on the right track with this?

Also if I run this will it ensure all traffic goes through tor and vpn no
matter what I do? Is there a chance some websites might use different protocols
and bypass tor?

Thanks

Re: [qubes-users] Network setup - TORVM-VPNVM

2017-08-18 Thread james . buttler1975
Hi thanks for the advice it seems my idea was correct then?

What I can't get my head around is

If I setup a whonix vm which torrifies all traffic and then set a proxy vm as
its net vm my thinking of it

>From the data packets point of view

You create a dAta packet on your app vm
That dAta packet travels to the whonix vm which sends the packet to first tor
node, then to the second until it gets to exit node. The exit node isn't my
machine how does that packet then know to go to the vpn?

Wouldn't the exit node have to send that packet back to my local app vm and
then to the vpn?

Meaning the exit node knows my IP and so will the vpn provider anyway?

The reason I want to have vpn second is because I want the option of anonymity
but I also don't want the end website to know I am using tor.

With this in mind is there any better setup?

Thanks

I'm just starting to use qubes os and I'm trying to understand how it all works.

If I wanted to setup the system to route all my traffic through tor and then
that tor traffic through a vpn

Would I simply setup a TORVM with Its netVM being the vpnvm ?

Or can a netVM not have its own netVM?

Thanks for the help

[qubes-users] Install issues

2017-07-13 Thread Ray James
I've picked up two issues which may be related, the first issue is that the
installer will not perform a md5 check, and goes straight to Anaconda. The
second problem is that Anaconda won't allow me to reclaim space on my drive, I
select the drive I want to install to and the reclaim button still remains
ghosted. I've downloaded Qubes 3 times, hopefully from different mirrors but
the problem still persists.

[qubes-users] Qubes VM Manager freezeup

what information I could provide to help diagnose it?

Nothing much(?) has been done to dom0 as far as I know, other than updates.

(Also, when powering off and rebooting, sometimes(/usually/always) it
seems to hang for upwards of the 3-minute hard timeout, something
about "Waiting for dom0 startup setup"…not sure if that's a related
issue or what, but I thought I should mention it in case it's relevant
to the main topic of this post.)

[qubes-users] Permissions

2017-05-31 Thread James Chi
I am trying to upgrade pip version from 8.1.1 to 9.0.1 using pip install
--upgrade pip. But it merely reinstalls 8.1.1. When I use sudo pip install
--upgrade, I get the following message:

The directory '/home/user/.cache/pip/http' or its parent directory is not owned
by the current user and the cache has been disabled. Please check the
permissions and owner of that directory. If executing pip with sudo, you may
want sudo's -H flag.

You must give at least one requirement to install (see "pip help install")

I am doing this on ubuntu. Can someone help me change my permissions so that I
can get this to upgrade? I would appreciate help. Thanks.

[qubes-users] Installed software and trying to use it

2017-05-27 Thread James Chi
I installed software using sudo apt-get. More specifically, this is what I use:

$ sudo apt-get install python-qt4 python-pip
$ sudo pip install
https://github.com/stratisproject/electrum-stratis/releases/download/2.7.17/Electrum-Stratis-2.7.17-unix.tar.gz

After entering those commands, the terminal stated: the directory
'/home/user/.cache/pip/http' or its parent directory is not owned by the
current user and the cache has been disabled. Please check the permissions and
owner of that directory. If executing pip with sudo, you may want sudo's -H
flag.

Then same message regarding 'home/user/.cache/pip' directory

The terminal went on to collect and download. Then installed.

I then received message to upgrade pip version which I tried to do with pip
install --upgrade pip

Then I tried to add the newly installed software to the list of shortcuts and
could not find it.

Did I install correctly?
If so, how do I find it and start it?

Thanks!

The windows installation stalled on "Starting Windows" I heard this happens.
So this is what I found is the solution:

Hi,

You must copy your config in
cp /var/lib/qubes/appvms/windows7/windows7.conf ~/

Then at the bottom change graphic driver xen by cirrus
vim ~/windows7.conf
-> change xen by cirrus at the bottom

Start the vm and install with
qvm-start windows7 --custom-config=~/windows7.conf

What does that mean?

I just tried what you said:

1. Copied iso to Downloads folder (using the link on the left menu of Files)

3. I then tried to copy iso to work folder, try to do the same thing using

I thought this was the command to find the iso in the cdrom drive:

qvm-start win7 --cdrom=/dev/cdrom

I don't have the iso file on dvd unfortunately. What can I do if I have it
only on usb? How do I figure out the location of the usb file ?

[qubes-users] Windows 7 Install

2017-05-24 Thread James Chi
Hello all,

I am not only new to Qubes, I am also new to linux so I am going to have to
learn a lot. I would appreciate any help.

I have a windows 7 iso on usb. I created a usb vm called sys-usb. Now I am
trying to copy the iso file to dom0 based on the following:

"qvm-start win7 --cdrom=/usr/local/iso/win7_en.iso

The above command assumes the installation ISO was transferred to Dom0 (copied
using dd command from an installation CDROM for example)."

Can someone help me figure out this step? Sorry for the newbie question. I
will have lots of these.

[qubes-users] Help with installation

2017-05-17 Thread James Chi
I downloaded Qubes to USB and installed on a Lenovo M91P desktop. It wasn't on
the hardware list but wanted to try anyway. After the installation, I was asked
to reboot which I did. I left the usb drive in and it went straight to the
installation again. I then unplugged the usb and rebooted and then the computer
gave me this error: Error 1962: No operating system found. Press any key to
repeat boot sequence."

Can someone help me figure this out? thanks.

Re: [qubes-users] Computer Models Guaranteed to work with Qubes 4.0?

2017-01-03 Thread 'James Funkhauser' via qubes-users
The lowest bar is the minimal requirements.[2] Even the minimal
requirements for 4.x are quite secure, since they now include VT-d and
VT-x (which weren't minimally required in previous Qubes releases). VT-d
is required for isolating devices (e.g., networking, USB),[3] and VT-x
is required for running certain kinds of VMs (e.g., Windows).[4] This
should be relatively easy to achieve, but you have to attend to more than
just the CPU's properties. For example, it's not enough that the CPU
alone supports VT-d. The motherboard has to support it also.

I see. I can then shop around for devices that have one of the CPUs listed as
being compatible. But what about motherboards? Is there a compatibility list
for those?

[qubes-users] Computer Models Guaranteed to work with Qubes 4.0?

2017-01-03 Thread 'James Funkhauser' via qubes-users
I would like to start saving up for a desktop that will run 4.0 out of the box.
Price isn't really an issue; what's important is that I have a computer that
meets all the standards necessary for running 4.0. I have looked at the HCL
list, but none of the machines have been tested with 4.0 (which I understand,
given that it is still in alpha). Would it be sufficient to just get a machine
with one of the processors listed in the ark.intel link on your site's "Minimum
requirements for 4.x" page? Or could I even just replace my current processor
with one of those listed there?

Otherwise, if anyone can point me toward a machine (or better yet, a few
different machines) that will meet all the necessary requirements, run the OS
with sufficient hardware isolation, etc., I would be most grateful. Thanks in
advance for your time.

I have a feeling the informed users/developers may easily overcome such an
obstacle (way beyond me) but stopping a sophisticated attacker seems like an
exercise in futility (camera on the keyboard and foobar router). Now if some
clueless thug starts poking around, armed with a flashdrive from hackers.com,

book.

I had done that in the past in another scenario. Turns out my employer's
idea of a secure workstation and the separate firewall VM do not mesh.
There were several ways it failed my employer's security checks, but then
they're expecting a standalone system or a standalone VM at most.

I'm reinstalling to clean up all the experimenting I did yesterday just to
get a fresh start, but I do have one more question I can't seem to find the
answer to. How do I make the default user the same as dom0 (i.e. jeward in

be so much more convenient than "user".

Re: [qubes-users] How to install clean template?

2016-06-22 Thread Ward... James Ward
I have even bypassed the firewall. I've got the VPN ProxyVM pointing
directly at NetVM.

Re: [qubes-users] How to install clean template?

2016-06-22 Thread james . e . ward
Andrew,

I have a different problem. I've cloned fedora-23 and I need to install a bunch
of software from my employer over their VPN using a script that does
"dnf install http://site.on.vpn/employer.rpm";

I've managed to get the VPN up and running in the template, but the dnf
installs are timing out. wgets also time out. Any ideas?

I have no problem installing software in a VM based on the template, but I need
the software installed in the template the VM is based on so I don't have to
reinstall it every reboot.

Thanks in advance,

James

I've got an X201, but I can't get the graphics to work to install Qubes OS. Any
ideas?

[qubes-users] How do I install packages to a template over a VPN?

2016-06-22 Thread james . e . ward
My employer supports Fedora as a workstation OS, but it requires a lot of
software be applied and that software must be obtained over their VPN.

What I have tried:
1. clone fedora-23 to OCfedora-23
2. download two VPN rpms from a VM and copy them over to the OCfedora-23
template
3. install and configure VPN on the OCfedora-23 template

Now this all works great. I can connect to the work VPN on the template, but I
am unable to install my employer's software onto the template. Bear in mind, I
can install the same software into a VM based off the template, but would have
to reinstall/reregister the VM (with my employer) on every boot.

I set up the VPN in a proxy VM and run qubes-setup-dnat-to-ns and directed the
template to use that to no avail.

Software install times out on dnf install from an http://site.on.the.vpn. I
tried a wget and it also times out. There's something different about a
template that prevents this as the same installation script works fine on a VM
based on the same template. Can someone tell me what this is?

Thanks in advance,

James
