You might try to create a Live USB stick with the Boot-Repair tool, and see if
that tool may create a new, functional boot menu for you, in case there is no
problem with the Qubes installation itself.

I think the challenge and point of this topic is to identify what is lacking in
the GUI, so that (among other things) all those mentioned commands get their
intuitive (right-click?) counterparts in the GUI. (Which parts of their
command-line output is NOT accessible from the GUI?)

[qubes-users] Qubes Template with optional, prompted full internal disk enccryption for new AppVMs?

2018-10-25 Thread Teqleez Motley
Hi all,
I would like to make a Qubes Template (Debian/Fedora) which upon creation of
new AppVMs, would offer to encrypt the /home/ folders.

Not sure how to approach/achieve this. Any pointers most appreciated.

For comparison:
Something of the type that Tails offers for Persistent volumes, but without all
the Tails restrictions:
Just with a variant of the normal Fedora-28 / Debian-9 base.

[qubes-users] Tails does not connect to the network

2018-10-15 Thread Teqleez Motley
Hi all, I have followed the instructions here:
https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/tails/

But on Qubes 4.x I cannot seem to make it connect to the network.
I can start Tails fine, and change the Wired network connections, also make
new profile, but it does not connect when I use the info provided from dom0
with the "qvm-ls -n Tails" command.

I have tried both with dynamic DNS but static IP, and with setting the DNS
to the same IP as the gateway, as also is suggested in the documentation.

(I am using the default (sys-firewall) as the network connection.)

Apart from that main problem, a couple of related questions:
It seems that:
a) No way to make these settings stick, so the network must be reconfigured
on each Tails start, is that correct?
b) No way to make the AppVM remember the ISO file as the starting point;
each time either have to locate it manually in the GUI, or (re-)use a
command in dom0 to start it?

[qubes-users] Cannot open anything from templateVM/appVM after moving to 4.x

2018-10-15 Thread Teqleez Motley
Hi all, I suspect that I need to change the "Main Qubes update repository"
of templateVMs that originates from Qubes 3.x?

I have exported both templateVMs and stand-alone appVMs from 3.2,
and restored them seemingly successfully on 4.x as far as the
backup/restore process is concerned.

Now, I can actually run updates from the Qubes Manager (GUI) on both the
templateVMs and the stand-alone appVM, but I cannot open any windows from
them.
Cannot even open terminal in the templateVM. When trying, nothing happens
other than the VM is started and showing green status, and remains open
until I shut it down from the Qubes Manager.

I think that the file /etc/apt/sources.list.d/qubes-r3.list needs to be
updated/replaced.
I can see in the terminal window that appears briefly during updates (it
closes afterwards, and is not possible to edit/enter), that it queries

"http://deb.qubes-os.org/r3.2/vm stretch main"

, which I would assume is not the correct one when running that templateVM
on 4.x, right?

So; Is there a dom0 command that can fix this on a running templateVM
without having a native Terminal?

[qubes-users] Testing Qubes-3.2.20180916 - "Error: There are no enabled repos"

On an old laptop without IOMMU, I tried to install the latest 3.2."alpha-1"
testing ISO image from the quality assurance site.
(btw: how can I verify those image available there? No signature file or
checksums available there as I could find...)

First, at the end of installation, an error occurs about not being able to
start sys-usb, but after restarting the system, that VM also starts without
issue.

The WiFi network works, I can browse through a DisposableVM or Firefox in
the work-VM.

I can also successfully update Whonix-GW and WS.

But when I try to update dom0, add KDE desktop, or the like, I get 3
errors, not sure if the second and third is a consequence of the first or
not.
(tar --help gives output that indicates that tar is actually
installed/working)
(Whonix connects successfully to Tor, which also indicates that the hwclock

[qubes-users] Possible to lock the screen without turning off the display(s)?

2018-09-19 Thread Teqleez Motley
Hi, is there a way to "lock" the keyboard and mouse as is the effect of
turning on the "screensaver" function - but without actually loosing sight
of what is going on on the screen? Just force the use of password in order
to continue doing something.

The "xtrlock" software does this, but not sure if I want to put that in
dom0, for security reasons.

There are many scenarios where it is very useful to lock without turning
the screen off, for example during a self-going presentation while the
presenter needs to shortly step out/go to the loo or other, while
presenting/watching a video, screencast, and the presenter temporarily has
the attention elsewhere, etc. etc.

Re: [qubes-users] Workspace names (even per-monitor)?

2018-09-17 Thread Teqleez Motley
Thanks for the reply. I have already the names technically just there as you
say, but they do not show up in the switcher unless..:

a) I have to hover over the WS in the switcher to get a pop-up showing the
name, but that only works if;
b) I have either minimized all windows so that no window shows in the WS
switcher, or at least not maximized any of them, so that it leaves a tiny spot
that I guess is possible to "hit", but which makes it too inconvenient, too
easy to point to an open window instead of the workspace background, which then
causes the popup to show the window name instead of the WS name.

So the point is how to show the workspace names without pointing, just visible
all the time.

Alternatively, if each WS could be given a customizeable color, maybe that
panel app could put a colored frame around each one, so we can easier
distinguish between them.

And: 2+ monitors adds to the need for visible names:

With 2 or more monitors, both belonging as "monitor-0" and "monitor-1" to each
WS, then the panel app has 2 sets of "areas" per WS... This is very practical
when showing miniature windows, BUT, it ends up becoming an issue when we
cannot see the WS name for the actual "pair". Not easy to see if it is the
right or left one that belongs in the same group as the one you are looking at
in the panel.

Complicating perspective;
- We are most likely going to get _more_ monitors, not less...

On a side note, related to navigating open windows on multiple Workspaces:
- The Tails live USB system has an ultra-practical (and "cool") "hud" that
appears as an overlay when placing the cursor in the upper-right corner.
Is such a thing possible to get working with Qubes 4.x?

[qubes-users] Window menu grouped by VMs?

There they are grouped per Workspace.

workspace when clicking on an open window in that menu?

You can burn ISO images to USB sticks, which effectively makes them behave like
a CD/DVD.
Not sure If I get your meaning in your last comment, unless you did not know
you can use ISO files with USB sticks?

About not booting the external USB:

Ref. #3 in my list about some USBs (sticks, or external drives, no difference
here) which sometimes gets listed by the BIOS as Hard Drives, and always then
gets listed AFTER the current hard drive. In those cases one need to re-order
that list, so that the external USB is tried before the internal HDD.

+ Also make sure that the USB partition in question actually has the Boot flag
after installation.
(BIOS can not fix that, AFAIK, need to use a tool like fdisk, gparted, gnome
disks or the like.)

Re: [qubes-users] Re: Qubes 4 boot ISO

2018-04-27 Thread Teqleez Motley
> > How are you making the boot device?

1. Whenever there is a problem getting for example a USB stick to boot/behave
as a Read-Only boot device from an ISO file, I use either Unetbootin or the
Linux dd command line tool to make the USB stick into a bootable Read-Only ISO
device. That normally works.

2. Sometimes the safest bet is also to use BIOS Legacy Mode (disable the BIOS
secure boot function + enable the BIOS CSM legacy mode).

3. If an otherwise properly made USB stick still does not boot, there are also
some BIOS systems that oddly places the recognised USB stick "inside" the list
of bootable Hard Drives. Read: AS a Hard Drive, as if you now have more than
your normal 1+ HDDs...
In those cases, you need to enter into the hard drive menu option, change the
order so that the USB stick is the first, and then go back and also place it
before the hard drive in the main Boot order menu (in these cases there are 2
places to do this, and you must place it first in both those lists...)

4. Then there is the not-too-rare situation where a particular system/computer
is incompatible with a particular USB stick, so it does not boot it even if
another computer does. Change to another USB stick model/make and try that one.

5. And in some cases, it still fails even if all has been done properly, and
all pieces are technically ready, IF you exit the BIOS when saving the last
changes with the normal direct "exit-and-save-and-reboot" option. Sometimes you
actually have to then power off completely right after it has rebooted (as long
as the BIOS changes are actually saved), remove and re-insert the USB stick and
then power the computer back on. Strange, but that also happens.

(And add to any possible confusion that yet again some systems seems to alter
the boot order (or have forgotten your saved changes) when you get back into
the BIOS after having physically removed the USB key, or tried to boot/replace
it with another USB key. Sometimes that is only an unsaved suggestion that
happens when you re-enter the BIOS. Your saved order might still actually be in
place as long as you boot from that particular USB stick you used when saving
the BIOS changes the last time.)

Right. I also have XP licence(s), and get what I need running there and also

Sometimes all that is missing and preventing moving to Linux/Qubes is a

Hm, I thought that in order to get such metadata out, one would have to access
the BIOS/hardware info directly?
For example, the serial number or the like of the motherboard, graphics card,
etc.
The hard drive of that laptop is long gone (reused), no Windows installation
left.
I just have the licence key, and hopefully the possibility to get to the
hardware serial numbers, etc. via some tool...

(Btw, I do of course have the license key, and I am NOT going to use that VM
online, so I do hopefully not need security updates or the like.)

[qubes-users] To use Windows 7 OEM as a Qubes VM; which hardware metadata is needed?

2018-04-24 Thread Teqleez Motley
Hi all,

One of my old laptops have Windows 7, and I would like to use that license for
a Qubes (H)VM.

I have one question and one related concern:

a) which metadata is needed for that OEM to continue believing that it is the
master OS and running on the "same" hardware as initially set up with?

b) That particular laptop has almost no battery left, and no available power
supply..:
In case that laptop just have a minute or two left of battery, and I do not
want to "test" if that is true..., I am looking for a way to fetch the needed
metadata mentioned in a) with a script, to store it to a USB immediately ASAP
after booting.

Obviously I dont need the Qubes OS itself to actually DO this, but would like
to know if I can hope to achieve this at all.
Any tips/pointers would be much appreciated.

Regards,
Teqleez

Just a shot in the dark, but regarding workarounds for graphics cards problems:
With Legacy BIOS boot, have you tried to add " nouveau.modeset=0 " on the
module code-line right after "quiet"?

I have also experienced this. On an ASUS Gamer laptop, with a particular USB
mouse connected, the install would fail. Just disconnecting that mouse and
starting the installation from scratch worked.
PS. It was connected via a USB hub that also had a USB keyboard attached. The
keyboard had no issues. Not sure if this stems from a combination of USB hub
and mouse model.
