of backup-files if we do not support _that_ arch? does debian have to
have the shell version in all arch?

 The order of the %s arguments in the Japanese translation differs from
 the order in the English sentence so the result will not make sense.
 Unfortunately it seems that bash's printf does not support referencing
 parameters by index (%1$s) as C's printf does.

 As far as I can see, the tag still points at the old commit (although it
 no longer exists... odd.) Anyway I had already merged and pushed your
 initial translation so I expected an incremental update. The git server
 on savannah won't let me overwrite the previous commit anyway, so an
 incremental commit is the only way to go at this point.

sorry for the confusion. will do incremental updates next time.
(or post a review first)

 So I made a diff between the old version and the new version and
 committed that as an additional commit.

Thank you for all the work and those additional works I caused.  Quilt
passes all the test on my system and looks great to me.

Yes.

What I'm not sure is that UTF-8 is an encoding but used at "charset".
When "UTF-8" is used in the content-type header line, does it mean
the message used UCS, is the "charset" header used for
encodings, or is charset and encoding interchangeable here?

If we align the name and the description:

Specify a character set for the messages on systems which don't use
UTF-8 or ISO-8859-15.  The specified character set must match...

But I like the original better. ;-)

Anyway here is a Japanese translated string:

UTF-8 や ISO-8859-15 を使っていないシステムで、メールの文字集合を指定。
指定した文字集合は、パッチと一致している必要がある。

I'll send it in a patch form once we decide the wording: charset vs
encoding.

However, I'm attaching two trivial patches.
One is to add *~ emacs backup pattern to .gitignore.
