Thanks to all. It did work correctly via "My Music", finding and
connecting to the SBS on the LAN.

If functioning correctly you simply select My Music on your Radio and it
should offer to switch to your local SBS server program.
If SBS is running and Radio cannot see it try going to SBS > Control
Panel > Diagnostics, what is reported for ALL pings, ports, IP's?

Thanks to both bpa and Soulkeeper. I was able to get the SB Radio to
pick up the stream from VLC, after changing the VLC encoder settings so
that the URL ended with an .mp3 extension, AND also changing the TTL
setting (to 10).
I've been doing much more since then - I now have a SHOUTcast account
Squeezebox Wiki document: 'Remote streaming'

You'll need to change the source but the output format is OK. Get MP3
working and then try other variations although I don't see any
advantage using WMA vs MP3
