I've been running a site for a while now without any of this kind of
protection. It's getting pretty annoying when someone hammers our
site and takes all our content. Some Googling hasn't come up with
much usefulness.
I'm not even sure yet which approach I'd like to take - blocking,
throttling,
IBM LWCM. Nothing will give you more perspective ;-)
Seriously though, you could use wordpress if your needs are simple
enough. Too many developer years have been spent creating webapps/
dealing with complicated cmses when wordpress fits the bill with
minimal shoe-hornery.
