Similar to your recent experience, running a compiled app in our 30 user LAN
Dan,
A couple of things you may want to check into. When I had similar problems some
of these were causes.
1) Do you put a TIMEOUT into your DAT file for the compiled apps? Prior to
having this code in the DAT file, I ran into "Phantom" connections. So my
connections kept increasing.
2)
ON RBase XE make sure to set PAGELOCK OFF and in compiled application set
UINOTIF OFF. When I changed these settings, the DB ran better.

we were getting the “cannot start application” or “cannot connect to database”
errors since upgrading to RBGXE several months ago.
Only a couple of instances of receiving this message did I find a corrupted
data
