RE: Re[2]: [RBASE-L] - OT - new laptop - last question

2016-09-22 Thread Javier Valencia
SSD is a solid state drive, no platter, no moving parts and very fast. You
simple remove the standard drive, plug in the new drive and the software will
clone the old drive into the new one, you can always use the old drive in an
enclosure with a USB port for backups.. I replaced my 700 GB standard drive
with the 500 GB Samsung 850 EVO SSD and my laptop flies. Startup used to take a
couple of minutes and not it takes 15 seconds, the nightly anti-virus deep scan
(very hard drive intensive) used to take ~220 minutes and now it takes ~30
minutes. The hard drive portion of the Windows Experience index now maxes out
at 7.9; I imagine it would be great for databases although I have not done any
tests. Wherever you buy it can probably install it for you for a nominal cost
or you can negotiate with them to install an SSD drive and upgrade Windows at a
discount. More and more laptops now come with SSDs, touch screens and Win10 Pro
standard; best if you can find one already configured.

Thanks for the response, Javier. You know how much your opinion means to me,
old friend! Both Best Buy and OfficeMax have stopped carrying Toshiba
laptops... wonder if that means anything. If I switched, I thought Dell is
how I would go.

SSD is a software upgrade to a hard drive? How is that not a totally different
piece of hardware?

A little late but here I go…
I used Toshiba computers exclusively for a long time but I quit while back as
the quality went down and the price went up. I just finished fixing a Toshiba
laptop screen with broken mounts for a friend. The quality is now terrible and
whoever designed that particular laptop did a lousy job and there are tons of
web sites with complaints. IMHO, Toshiba is now overrated and overpriced when
compared to other brands such as Dell, Lenovo and Acer..
I use now Dells and I have really good luck with them…just be sure to take the
3 year plan otherwise be ready to pay for support after one year.
You can update any laptop to SSD with no problems as the SSD software that
comes with the drive clones the old drive. I upgraded my Core I-7 based laptop
to a SSD drive and it works so much faster now and will extend the life of my
laptop by at least a couple of years.
As I understand all versions of Windows (Home, Pro) are installed in all
computers but only one version is activated, so, upgrading from one version to
the other is very quick and painless. Having said that, might as well start
with the PRO version and you will not need to worry about it in the future and
it will save you money.
I am slowly moving to WIN 10 and I regret not upgrading most of my computers
when it was free; I will not use any of the WIN 8 versions as they appears to
be buggy.

Last question!! Does it matter if I get windows 10 Home or Pro? Here at my
place, there is no network, I am standalone. I occasionally bring my laptop to
a client's, and want to be able to plug it in and log into their network.

I would suggest upgrading to Pro. You can do more with pro. I would also
suggest upgrading and applying all patches before loading any programs. Just
makes life a little easier.

1. Never had one, never needed one;

2. Had one, didn't need it;

3. Had one, sure glad I did;

3. Didn't have one, sure wish I did.
