Scot, I'd say you're on the right track. What kind of rod are you carrying? I've carried fly rods in their own tubes hundreds of miles with no issues. I just bolt a PVC end cap to one of the rear dropout braze-ons, then toe strap the rod tube to the rear rack. This photo sort of shows it in action

Years ago it happened to me. Sometimes damage doesn't show up right away, to yourself or the bike. Visit a doctor asap, and document your injury. It may take a day or two to feel all the pains. Have the bike seen by a highly reputable bike shop, and have the alignment of the frame checked along

I would only add that I do not take it for granted that a pedal comes from the factory properly put together if it uses ball bearings. If the bearings do not feel right upon putting on the bike , double check the adjustment of the bearings. If they are too tight or loose they won't last long !
