I've had two Phils; one came in my orange Ramboulliet and has run well for
eleven years including a number of deluges and subsequent slop following. I
just replaced it with an SKS because I switched to wide double gearing on
my Zephyr cranks, removed the third ring and spacers and needed a short
I think my Phil BB on my Sweetpea needs those mud cup guards in green...
Ohhh shiny!
That said, my Riv Bleriot had a Shimano UN-53 BB which lasted just over 10k
miles. Mechanic Mark said it was crunchy and replaced it with another
Shimano BB.
The headseat was a Shimano Ultegra a friend gave m
The oooh shiny gene is not restricted to males:)

Here is one reason to go Phil:

Swell looking bb mud guard cups available is silver and several other
colors. Of course if they work with less expensive bbs then no reason to
go all Phil.

Tange Levin HS - cheapy but so good. Never needs adjustment, in my
experience. Will get a silver CK if the Tange ever wears out.
Have a Phil BB but a Shimano UN-5x is currently filling the role with no
problems. The Phil will see use again when the Shimano wears out.

I have no experience with WI BBs. My experience with Shimano and Tange square
taper BBs is favorable enough that I'm no longer tempted to try $100+
competitors (I have used Phil in the past, but was disappointed). In the
external bearing BB market, I think Chris King is worth the considerable

You guys are awesome. The comments in this thread are the exact same back

Living with the male "h shiny" gene mutation can be difficult and it's
nice to have a support group.
Jim your point on the phil from a practicality standpoint hit home pretty
square. P
I have good experience with the Cane Creek headset, and they have dropped
the price to $65, so it's hard to see how you could go wrong there. I have
both PW & tange bb and they both seem to work well. The only reason not to
buy White is the limited lengths. I think a lot of this depends on w

I've been pretty happy with the Stronglight cartridge bearing headsets,
very light and seem pretty durable. These are not the needle bearing ones,
those are hard to get. I've also been using Origin8 cartridge bearing
bottom brackets, they work well too. I don't agree with Jim Thrill on a

The 12K and 8K Phils on my custom Rivs are ti with aluminum cups. No
loctite, just grease and torque. Fixed gears, too, for what that's worth.
The Fargo, Ram and the earlier Trike and Sam and Diamond Back and '95 Riv
had steel.
Note: very little rain riding, though.

it's nice to be able to afford pretty things, but headsets and BB have the
least return IMHO. i have a nice needle-bearing ultegra and my BB is a cup
and cone WTB/Suntour that i can see using for another 20 years easily.
the cartridge shimano's are also cheap and last long enough that replaci
IMO Phil BBs are a waste of $$$. The bearings don't last any longer than those
of a Shimano UN53/54/55, and when the time comes, it costs more to replace them.
CK headsets are awesome, but any decent sealed cartridge bearing headset will
give long service.

I like the latest version of the White Industries bottom bracket because it
is so easy to install. Been using the
I have the Chris King headset on my X0-1 and 2 Rivs. 10-year guarantee is
hard to beat and they seem to be very well-sealed and set-em,
forget-em.Both Rivs have the Phil BB - stainless steel, not Ti...that seems
a little overkill. I did have some issues with the Phil on my A/R ;
creaking,loose.
I went with the SKS bottom bracket from Compass .. expensive but not to
bad.
I just put a Chris King Headset on my Bombadil. Since it was just back
from paint I went ahead and faced it before pressing it in. The headset
press wasn't big enough for my bike but managed.
I can't say much as
I use regular unsealed bearing headsets, but have always tossed the bottom
cages and added bearings on the bottom race to avoid notchy steering.
They will go virtually forever that way. But lately I'm all about the
needle bearing headsets Riv is carrying.no fuss :)
