At the risk of incurring the disapproval of Louis fans, I will share a method
that might help alleviate the problem. The decal in the photo below consists
of a diamond shape cut from a sheet of decal vinyl, and another sticker which
you will no doubt recognize. I did this as I prefer it to
Benedikt, I'm not sure why mine is peeling. It could have been caused by
me, as I have a stand, and I theorize that I might have unthinkingly
clamped the bicycle on the decal, instead of on the seat post. Oh well.
It appears that the conventional wisdom is leave it alone - don't try to
somehow
The decal on my seat tube is cracking and peeling off as well. Been doing
that for a long time. Recently I noticed a little of the paint coming off
where the decal used to be. About two days later I realized what's causing
it. When I come home the bike comes indoors and gets hung up on the wall
There is definitely a Rivendell thing where they admire the worn out. And
it appeals to me too. Especially if you rode the bike 5,000 miles and the
decal got chipped. I think it shows (1) that you actually ride your
bicycle; and (2) that you 're not such a mindless consumerist that you need
to
That's Grant's thing. The flash studio they did a couple years ago in San
Francisco had what has to be the most scratched up Rivendell in existence
hanging proudly on the wall (I think it was Spencer's, as shown in an early
Reader). I admire his ability to tolerate such abuse of a fine bicycle,
Rivendell sells hatchets. Amazing the fine work that can be done with a
keen edge and good hand. Grin. I'd call it beausage and be done, but then I
generally don't even notice things like that.
With abandon,

Hello,

On one of my trips to Rivendell Grant pointed out to me the decals on his
Hilsen. His were cracked as you describe but I do not remember any
bubbling. Anyway, it seemed to me he liked it. I suppose it's a beausage
sort of thing. I got to say that I kind of liked it too.

On Wednesday,
That really sounds like a question worth calling Rivendell. As
unattractive as a damaged decal may be, leaving well enough alone may be
better than damaging the clear coat or paint. Time for advice from the
pros.
