I have found that, upon aligning new pads as best I can, if there still is some squeal then an application of water (splash from garden hose), or riding in the rain somehow makes the squeal immediately go away, and stay away even after everything dries out. Maybe the water helps the pads break

I've used canti's for along time and never experienced a squeal I could not remedy until I started using Kool Stop Salmon pads , the smooth posted Eagle 2. As a last resort, I shortened them, cutting off the tail end(where the second channel is, use that a guide and cut right there).

If you want a genuine 28.6mm clamp on silver FD, go vintage from ebay . Check for Suntour or Shimano 28.6 FD's. I've found that even most doubles can shift triples just fine though , FWIW. The ones with a nice long cage :) Like : many SunTour's and Shimano's and even Campy's . But really,
