[RBW] Re: Replace 27 wheels with 700c or 650b? Brakes = Silvers
The brakes I'm looking at cover 79-99 mm, at least according to Amazon's description. I need about 89mm reach so they should work. Amazon lists models 324 and 326 on a search, but the model isn't in the description of the brake I've ordered. Thanks for the offer on the brake, I may contact you offline if what I have on the way doesn't work. If a 27 to 26 conversion is possible with either brake, this could be good news for Riv types on a budget. I'll post the results / pics. On Thursday, September 4, 2014 10:47:05 PM UTC-5, Peter Adler wrote: The specific model is Tektro C324, with 98-116mm reach. If you decide to get more, you might want to call Rivendell; they had a case at the sale, and as near as I can tell, I was the only one who bought a set. They might be grateful to sell another. Or you could get back to me; I'm assuming I'll never use the now-recessed front, which should work fine for a nutted rear. They seem like pretty wussy brakes - good enough to stop a cruiser, but not quick enough to stop anything moving at speed. If the Silvers don't make it, and I can't find a serious sidepull that gives me the necessary reach, I'll switch back to G_d's own brakes - centerpulls (Weinmann or Dia-Compe 750s, whichever comes to hand first). It looks like it'll work great and let me put on fatter tires than I could with 700c or 650b so I'm a little surprised I can't find any such conversions on the google. If the big Tektro brake isn't total crap I'll be ordering the rear and having a custom 130mm rear wheel built. As for the nutted brakes: I picked up my recessed Silvers at a Riv garage sale a couple of years ago (missing the attachment fittings for the QRs, which I cannibalized off salvaged brakes from bike kitchens). At the last Riv garage sale in July, I found several pairs of huge Tektro sidepulls that Grant IDed as parts for some abandoned project; Tektro lists them for beach cruisers. Fortunately, they had nutted bolts, and Riv was selling them for $5/pair. The bolts were not easy to get out of the brakes, but they fit the Silvers just fine. Re: [RBW] Replace 27 wheels with 700c or 650b? Brakes = Silvers
I switched a Raleigh Marathon Mixte from 27 to 650B with Silvers and had no problems. Plenty of reach. My LBS did a great job of coldsetting the rear triangle to 130 for me. So you really need to determine the wheel size first before selecting the brakes. Also, unless you can score brakes that uses nut instead of recessed allen, you will have to drill the frameset to use most recess-allen-equipped brake calipers. I tend to use center-pull brakes for these conversions for easy and inexpensive sourcing, as well as better braking power. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. And finally is it one of the best saddle bags you have ever used? -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] More details about the medium Sackville saddle bag
It's not very heavy. It's very waterproof. I live in Portland and I use my large year round. It's fantastic. You won't regret it. [RBW] Well, Damn
My Hilsen is out of commission for a little while. Heading on NW Broadway towards the bridge, at Flanders, when a silver VW Golf making a left turn hits me. I go up and over and make a nice dent on the windshield. Roll back down when the car stops and land on my feet (like a cat!) and walk away, a bit dazed. Cops show up, we have a party with the firefighters, ambulance comes and leaves. Witness gives his story, all the data gets swapped. Front rack is bent, front fork is askew, wheel is tacoed, but everything is fixable. Police officer gives me a ride back to my apartment (hey it turns out cops carry bikes on their cars all the time, by fitting the wheels between the grill and the big external bumper on the front). X-rays turn out okay, no fractures. Everyone at the hospital was great. It was about 8 hours ago and I'm just coming down from the endorphins. I got a malt milkshake (horchata cookie!) to celebrate. Oh yeah, and my helmet is all cracked up. I'll be fine though. Anyway, keep an eye out there... Glad you came out of it relatively unscathed, but wait for a couple of days before you say All's well. I got hit by a *right* turning car (on my left, not oncoming) in 2006 and went over in a slo-mo fall, landing on my face. Re: [RBW] More details about the medium Sackville saddle bag
It weighs no more than a comparably sized Ortlieb pannier: more than 2 lbs, I'd say. Can't say if it is waterproof. The old Nelson Longflaps were as waterproof as plastic buckets. In respect of quality and useful carrying capacity for the volume, it is the very best bar none that I have used, though all I've used are the different Carradices and a couple of the Cartwrights, apart from smaller Acorns and VOs and Berthouds. I'd have mine still if I didn't simply find panniers more capacious, better balanced, and more convenient. YMMV. [RBW] Help with my Flyer saddle please. Out of ideas.
I have ridden it in great comfort on it for the last year. Both cycling shorts and regular shorts and pants. Suddenly, I am getting some annoying perennial pressure and I am out of ideas as to what to do about it. More so with cycling shorts, and feels better when just regular pants. It started the day after a 27-mile light rain ride, but the saddle didn't get wet as I had a bag on it. I figured that maybe the wet atmosphere of the long ride made the leather change a little. But the leather looks the same. I have fenders, so there shouldn't have been spray from the tires, either. I tensioned the saddle ever so gently. The saddle has been getting loose feeling anyway over the last few months and readily bows to thumb pressure testing, though it always felt great to ride. But tensioning didn;t make a noticeable diff as far as I can tell. So I checked it out, and the saddle height went down a smidge and the angle changed about .6 degrees, nose up, over the last year from the original set up. I readjusted everything back to where it was. Better, but not perfect like before. I can't think of what else it could be. The bike is all set up the same, as far as I can tell. My only last thought as to what it might be: *Maybe the Flyer springs don't stand as tall after a year of riding and so the saddle need to have the nose lowered more than normal to get the angle right? Do the springs lose a little height after a while that the back end of the saddle wouldn't be as high even though I got the angle back to where it was all along?* Anyone have any ideas or know what causes this? -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. I do not own a Sackville, but remember someone commenting here that the large has a different attachment mechanism than the medium and small. Re: [RBW] Re: More details about the medium Sackville saddle bag
The medium attaches to the saddle only. The large requires a rack for support, because for a saddlebag, it's huge. I can't remember the difference but I do remember thinking I'd get the large based on that particular feature alone. Maybe someone who knows what I'm talking about will chime in and explain? Is it a heavy bag when it is empty, 1,2 or more lbs ? Second of all is the bag really waterproof?
