Id like to see what the first run looked like if you care to post pics. I don't

What year did you buy it? Interested to know how old an original is.

I think they didn't have the "2" decal on the ST. Is that right?

[RBW] Re: SKS B 65s or Velo Orange Zeppelins?

2017-10-07 Thread Patrick Moore
A rather late and more careful look at the VO site shows that the 700C
Noirs are available only up to 52 cm wide; not wide enough for me. So the
choice will be between the SKS B 65 and the VO Silver Fluted 63.

Therefore, remove the scratching question and answer the first, more
general question.

Great point, John. The closest analog to how to the foot works in cycling
is squats. I may try riding barefoot again with these pedals (though the
gaps are big, which may be problematic). For the last several years I've
been riding in Xero Z-Trek sandals, so I keep all pins in.
https://xeroshoes.com/shop/feeltrue-products/ztrek-men/.

For this winter I'll be trying their size 14 Coaltons with my boiled wool
socks. https://xeroshoes.com/shop/shoes/casual-shoes/coalton/ They feel
good so far on test rides at 35˚F, but that's a long way from -20˚F. Grin.
Room for another pair of socks in there.

Hi,

Thanks Patrick & Jay for sharing your set up. Do you remember if you
needed to lower your saddles as much as the 2-3 cm's PI recommends? Less?
And Patrick, did you remove the pins so you could go barefoot?

Thanks Garth, but most of my shoes have flexible soles, so I'd like to
try a longer pedal to support my soles. The MKS Grip Kings are 78mm wide x
116mm long vs the Catalysts which are 94mm wide x 127mm long (my
measurements). So far I like the spikes and the extra support provided by
the Catalysts. Riding faster doesn't really interest me right now versus
recovering, staying alive and just having some fun on my Hunqapillar.

I've been undergoing physical therapy, part of which involves doing
dead lifts & squats, after recovering from a retoperitoneal hematoma and
hospital-acquired infection. It was the idea behind the Catalysts which
interested me, and I wanted to see if biking using the Catalysts would work
in sync with my other exercises. So far, I agree with Patrick & Jay, the
larger platforms are really comfortable and fun to ride on.

2017-10-07 Thread Jay Connolly
If you accept the developer’s research, then pedalling midfoot is not entirely
the point. It’s a matter of applying the “lifting” force from more of the foot.
If memory serves, he says the benefit will come only if the force is applied
from either side of the arch. Whether you accept his thinking (and research or
not), it’s worth a look-over to understand the development of the pedal.

[RBW] Rosco Bubbe step through now configured for winter

2017-10-07 Thread Bill Lindsay

I enjoyed getting some off-road riding in on my Rosco Bubbe Step Through
with ~2.1" knobbies. Then I did some long road rides with Babyshoe Pass
tires, and it excelled at that as well. Now I've got it configured for
Winter with full coverage hammered Honjo fenders, and I've gone to a little
more tread with some Grand Bois Hetre tires that were in the stash. For
the next step I will install a rear Nitto Campee rack, so I'll have a setup
that can accept four removable lowriders.

With the rear rack installed, I'll have the ability to run front and rear
panniers, a rear saddlebag, a front shopsack and handlebar tube. I've also
determined that my Relevate bikepacking frame bag fits on TOP of the top
tube. That makes it not so much of a step-through, but it give me a bike
with tons and tons of carrying capacity.

[RBW] Re: Anyone using Catalyst Pedals on their Rivendell?

2017-10-07 Thread Deacon Patrick
To expand on my previous post: I don't track milage or mph or time. I just
ride. What I do notice is if I'm in a higher or lower gear on a given
section. A myriad of factors effect this, starting in greatest significance
with the state of the engine. Am I more tired and thus going slower with
the same effort? I always start there. Then environmental factors come next
in significance. Wind? Wet /muddy ground? Hotter? Colder? Am I dressed
right or wrong? Then comes the bike. The pedals make a great difference in
comfort all the time. Comfort CAN translate to greater efficiency and thus
speed over time, but be a very subtle difference. I noticed perception of
increased power in low torque situations (climbing, esp. at lower cadences)
and need to observe if this is confirmed by a half gear increase in my
climbs. If so, that's quite a big difference given the amount of time spent
climbing vs descending on any given ride.

Grip King question: No. No other pedal on the market is as long as this.
Here is a comparison shot of the Catalyst vs VP Vice:

[RBW] Diff between slick GravelKing and Compass Babyshoe Pass? Looks the same. Described the same.

2017-10-07 Thread lum gim fong
Like iphones
Same price everywhere seems like.

I remember the huge price diff in Nifty Swiftys between RBW and Niagara.
I asked RBW about this.
RBW said they didnt like the idea that Niagara could sell so cheap as they
didnt bear the R/E/design costs. But RBW said they couldn't do same because RBW
bore the R/E/design costs.

Perhaps Compass is the only US distributor.
Maybe this helps then ensure uniform pricing nationwide.
Like PJWhite with Son hubs. But I think there is another SONhub distributor in
the USA now.

[RBW] Re: Anyone using Catalyst Pedals on their Rivendell?

2017-10-07 Thread Jay Connolly
Probably depends on the length of the rider’s foot. The catalysts are designed
to bridge the entire arch of the foot. It works even with my huge feet,
removing the concentration of pressure from the ball of the foot. According to
the hype on the Pedalling innovations page, optimal efficiency will be achieved
only in this centered orientation. YMMV. Works for me. The MKS pedals are
almost an inch shorter, I believe, but they may well provide the same
experience to riders with feet smaller than mine.

Re: [RBW] Re: Is tube patching a permanent, reliable fix?

2017-10-07 Thread Reed Kennedy
Good advice, to carry fresh patch glue! Nothing quite like trying to patch
and finding the tube has gone solid.

On that topic: Has anyone found a way to buy the little Rema tubes that
actually fit inside the patch kit? All the ones I’ve found that are sold
individually are larger (longer) than the little blue plastic box.

Not the end of the world, but as I rarely (if ever) use up a tube I’d much
rather the smaller ones that fit.

[RBW] Diff between slick GravelKing and Compass Babyshoe Pass? Looks the same. Described the same.

2017-10-07 Thread Garth
It's easy to get a shipping estimate from a website like Grand Bois. Add items
to the cart, then checkout as guest, fill out the form with a dummy name and
address, just use a valid zipcode of some sort. Then you will have an exact
quote. For the heck of it I added 2 Hetre and I don't recall the exact numbers
but it ended up being like low to mid 50's per tire to the midwest US. 4 tires
was not much better. I find it odd that very few sell the GB tires in the US
anymore, all went to Compass. I also find it funny how so many are sold tight
around the same price of 57-59$ , not unlike the "magical" 19.99 ads on the
tele ! Monkey see, monkey copy !

Re: [RBW] Re: Experience with wiggys boots or chukkas?

2017-10-07 Thread Tony DeFilippo
Thanks Patrick, I remembered that you had spoken highly of the long johns
and know many people (including Grant) vouch for their sleeping bags.

Philip I couldn't agree more about blundstones, I have a pair of their
steel toe boots and they are my go to boot when my work travel takes me to
industrial sites, super easy on/off at TSA! I've thought about adding a
pair of their regular boots as well. I've even considered their 'dressier'
versions to augment or replace some work shoes. Very comfortable, easy on
and off. I haven't used them for riding though I'm sure they'd do fine. I
think they do make a cold weather version, or maybe the regular plus the
Wiggy's socks would accomplish a similar idea to the Wiggy's Chukkas. From
the website it looks like he throws in a pair of the socks w/ the boots so
the $200 boots are insulated and come with $35 or 45 insulated socks
(depending on height).

Maybe I'll just go ahead and get the socks and see what I think about the
lamilite insulation on my feet w/ boots I've already got. Every year as it
gets colder (hasn't yet in VA) I go back to his site thinking about trying
them...

[RBW] Re: Anyone using Catalyst Pedals on their Rivendell?

2017-10-07 Thread Jay Connolly
I have these pedals on my Joe and really like them. It took a few rides to
adjust to riding with the foot more forward, but now I don’t even think about
it, even though I have these on only one of several bikes. I bought them
because flats cause me hotfoot on rides of more than about an hour. These
pedals solved the problem. I’ll probably pick up one more set before too long.
