[RBW] WTB: Soma Shikoro 38mm tires

2022-08-17 Thread Eric Marth
Hi everyone — Do you have a set of lightly used 700C Shikoros in 38mm? Hit
me up! Looking for these for my partner's bike, we want to plump up from
32s.

Thanks!

[RBW] Re: "adult cruiser of the Apocalypse" - Susie review

2022-08-17 Thread Paul Clifton
Lots of good stuff in this review. I'm happy to finally know that the head
tube angle is 69 degrees. That seems about right, and having someone
corroborate the ride qualities I've been experiencing with my Gus:
1. The handling is twitchy (for a Riv) but it's really easy to change how
the bike handles by moving my hands forward and backward on the bars.
Having so much real estate on the bars because of the long top tube -->
lots of bar sweep is seriously awesome and makes the bike so much fun in so
many conditions.

2. The very upright riding position engages the quads a lot more and the
glutes a lot less. I first noticed this on my baby bike, and it's
definitely carried over to the Gus. Like Russ, I'd like to get my glutes
more engaged, so I'm still fooling with my handlebar height and stem
length, but I think it's just part of the ride. I'm pretty sure my quads
are overdeveloped relative to my glutes to begin with, so I'll be adding in
more squats and bridges to my cross training plan to keep everything in
balance. I out sprinted my fiend on his drop bar gravel bike anyway, so I
don't think it affects "performance" enough to matter on a fun day out, but
it could impact endurance over a long ride, maybe - only way to know is try.

The medium has an additional bottle cage mount, but I'd still like some
more three pack mounts speckled around the frame.

What a freaking awesome bike. I'm so stoked about mine, but I don't know
about Russ' claim that it'll be a forerunner of what we'll see with the
upcoming ATB trend. I kind of think that no matter what happens with ATBs,
it'll always be an outlier - no one else is ever gonna spec chainstays like
that ...

[RBW] Re: Your Road or Road-ish Riv Rubber Radius (tire width)

2022-08-17 Thread Eric Marth
Thanks again to everyone for sharing specifications and philosophies.

Putting in a nice ride this weekend on plenty of unpaved stuff my 44mm
Snoqualmie Pass extralights were comfortable and suited for the ride.

Now that I've heard from a lot of people running tires in the mid to high
30s I'd be interested to try some out if it was a very easy, low friction,
low cost situation. Like borrowing or finding a beat pair of 38mm Barlow
Pass or 35mm Jon Bon tires for comparison.

[RBW] Re: Ride report: Shenandoah foothills

2022-08-17 Thread Eric Marth
Thanks, Bob. Yes, right to roam would be lovely and could be really helpful
for riders looking to stay off the bigger roads! I've heard that in some
Scandi countries (forgive me for not being specific) you can camp in any
open space and trespassing is defined as something like "you can get within
sight of a home." Corrections and more info welcome.

Thanks, Ryan for watchin' and readin'!

Re: [RBW] Re: 2021 Homer wheelbase numbers

2022-08-17 Thread Bones
I’ve used sidepulls and took no issue with them. I can’t claim to have
experienced any night and day differences. I just find that Paul center
pulls and levers have the best feel. They also maximize your clearances,
look sharp, and probably provide more powerful braking. In my opinion, they
are a perfect match for this bike. I like cantis and V-brakes on other
bikes, but on the homer, center pulls just feel right to me.

 54.5 Homer 43"

 55 Cheviot 45 1/4" (or 45 1/2")
 55 Platy 47"
52 Clem L 52" (I got to ride Leah's Bicycle Belle Ding Ding)

And, yes, the blue color on Homer is lovely.

I've gotten quite a few "yikes!" with that

Thank you for measuring that, Bones! The official spec on the racks on
buses here says the maximum supported wheelbase is 46”. 118.75 cm
translates to 46.75”. Argh, I’m tempted to think that the extra 0.75”
should be fine ™.

Have sidepulls not performed well enough for you?

Re: [RBW] Re: 2021 Homer wheelbase numbers

2022-08-17 Thread Daman Kumar
Roberta,

It’s interesting to see that the Homers reach 43” at the 54.5 cm size. I am
interested in wheelbase numbers for the exact same reason, although I live
in a suburb. Riding around, and especially commuting, is a lot more
convenient if I have the option of riding the bus back home or to the ferry
dock.

Side story: when we lived in Boulder, CO I had loaded up the Clem on a bus.
I had misjudged just how risky it was, and the rear wheel popped off the
rack *while the bus was moving *. Fortunately, that’s all that happened. On
the bus ride back, I started the rear wheel to the rack to prevent it from
happening again. The drive politely informed me she wouldn’t let me do that
again, and I wouldn’t be able to use the rack of my bike didn’t fit. No
more of that, thank you.

 Hello, Rivsters,

Has anyone here measured the wheelbase of their 61.5 cm Homer? I've
been meaning to replace my 59 cm Clem H with a shorter (emphasis on the
*er*) wheelbase-d bike for months now, and only just started actively
looking at options. The wheelbase is the only real complaint I have with
the Clem -- it is way too long to fit on a bus rack, which diminishes a
 bike's utility for me.

Given the increase in chainstay length for the 2021 model, I wanted to
check with the group if anyone has measured, or could measure, the
wheelbase of their 61.5 cm bike.

I was originally considering picking up a Sam frame from the next
batch, but I do want to get an Atlantis a few years down the line as my
forever bike, and I felt there's a considerable overlap between the two. I
intend to use the Homer as an S24O/bike-camping, go-fast (when not bringing
groceries) bike. Randonneuring has interested me for a while, and it just
seems perfect (although, I don't think *I* would have much trouble using a
Sam or Atlantis for brevets given I'm not really a fast rider). At under
 170 lbs. I believe it shouldn't be a problem. I digress.

 So... anybody?

[RBW] Re: One Rivendell to rule them all

2022-08-17 Thread Philip Williamson
Bill laid out a good summary of the different ways people approach this
question.
I've only ever owned a single Rivendell - my 2004 Quickbeam.

   - As an answer to "what one Riv would you have among other bikes," it
would be my Quickbeam. I have this. If I had TWO bikes, the Quickbeam would
   be one.
   - As an answer to "what one Riv would you have as your only bike," 10
years ago it would be the Quickbeam, but today it would probably be an
Atlantis or some well-used 1993 Allrounder. I'm older, fatter, slower, and
I do longer rides and bike camp with other people. They do not ride fixed
gears in that way, even those with Quickbeams. When you're riding with
people it's more fun if you're rolling with similar equipment and rhythm.
"You do pretty good on that thing" gets tiresome.
   - As an answer to "what one Riv would be perfectly optimized for a kind
riding you love," it would probably be a Legolas.
