I'm curious about all those wide brimmed hats for riding. I just has some Carolyn Custom Caps made and I specified 4 cm brims and should have specified 3 cm brims, because when I get any hat pulled down securely, any normal brim blocks my sight while riding. The 4 cms are good, but 3 cm would be even better. (Carolyn said, any smaller than 3 cm and things start getting ridiculous.) Maybe I have a very low forehead? At any rate, it's always a struggle both to keep a hat from blowing away and still see when on the hoods, let alone the hooks. Beth: My 50 mm Berthouds worked in a very tight situation -- Riv Road with Dia Comp normal single pivots and 32 mm tires. I expect that 45 mm VOs ought to work fine with up to 32 mm tires, tho' the clearance may be tight. IME, the principal restriction is the fork crown, not a single pivot caliper. As for centerpulls, Mafac, Weinmann, and Shimano, all worked well for me, best with Matthausers, tho' I do have a pair of Dura Ace centerpulls (perhaps rebranded Tourneys) that worked very, very well (I mean dual pivot well) with old black pads. One more remark: Any problem I've had with brakes has been, largely, in the rear. But the new non-spiral brake cable (it looks like a beefier indexing deraileur cable) is highly un-compressible (that's an awkward phrasing!) and makes a huge difference for the formerly mushy rear mechanical disk on my mountain bike -- this I know is just one data point. I love my MAFACs, personally, they are great brakes, but the Dia Compe/ Weinmanns work just as well. The finish on the Dia Compes is superior in many cases, IMHO. They are also around in massive piles at used bike shops (around here anyway). Braking is very good, in my opinion, with lots of modulation. Modern pads really have made a huge difference. Aero style/modern brake levers will also get you more leverage and that is noticeable when running center pulls. Personally I would not shy away from center pulls. For the record, if the 750s are too long, you ought to be able to find shorter ones. I know there are lots to be found around here.
