I guess you should get that information from Rivendell for me too, if you decide it's ok. Copper goes dark brown and stays that way for a long time before going green. That is a problem. Copper lasts so much longer than cotton. It will take forever for the coating to wear off. [RBW] Re: Copper wire handlebar twine
Haha! The copper outlasting the cotton is okay, and it is probably infinitely reusable. Unless you have to snip a piece to unwind it, in which case you might only get 10 to 40 years out of the wire, depending on how much you have to snip. If you wanted it green, you could probably lightly sand the wire after it's wrapped, and paint it with a patinating agent. I think you can get it in craft stores, along with copper paint. [RBW] Commuting makes me angry...(might be a little ranty!)
This morning, my commute to work was a bit scary. As I headed down the PCH from the Leucadia area, I was passed a bit too close by a white Toyota pickup with a pipe tied to its passenger side (along the top of the bed and over the side mirror) like a lance protruding from the front. This was close to the Panickin Coffee place for those who are locals. Then, as I was riding through Encinitas, some guy in a white Lexus SC430 (CA plates containing FORE) decides to buzz me. Then, before I knew it the same white pickup truck with the pipe came along and buzzed me again. Now, I was yelling and gesturing at this guy when he decided to slam on his brakes. I was mad enough to take this guy on, but mostly I just wanted to report him so I whipped out my phone. He must have seen this and he took off. The rest of my commute all I could think about was finding one of these two vehicles parked along my route so I could report them. Unfortunately, I was unable to see the plate of the truck and I only got the FORE on the Lexus. I hate it when my commute is ruined by people whose idea of fun is crap like this. Anyway, stay safe out there. And remember, sometimes your best defense may be your phone (and maybe a frame pump...could you imagine trying to beat someone with a CO2 cannister?) Sorry to hear it, that's a crappy way to start the day. It seems like i was getting buzzed at least once a day right at the end of our snowmelt, it felt like all the drivers were crabby to see bikes on the road again and were venting (dangerously). I completely agree that the best defense to carry is probably a phone, and a phone with a camera would be extra useful for grabbing a quick shot of a license plate (though i'm generally not quick enough for this). Documentation is always a good thing. I've seen cyclists heave u-locks at threatening cars, and know people who have tossed open (full) waterbottles in passenger seats. I've resorted to keeping a few cards printed with the MN traffic laws on them (courtesy of a local cycling group) and tossing them in someone's window if they're driving stupidly around me. It's rare that i have a chance to do that, but it's a much healthier outlet than starting a fight with someone in a giant metal box. -- Bill Connell St. Paul, MN -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. or as we used to call 'em - pukka-pukka That's exactly the term and the trade off I use when setting up cantilevers. Shorter flatter straddle = more spongy but more powerful. Taller straddle = more rim clearance and more pukka- pukka. I picked up pukka-pukka in 1988, working at a shop. I remember the mechanic who taught me the term. Brakes that feel hard (or as we used to call 'em - pukka-pukka) are less powerful. Sheldon wrote it more elegantly than I can relate here: http://sheldonbrown.com/cantilever-geometry.html Flexing on the bolt is not too likely, but if it occurred, I would suspect it would create chatter as it moved on the rim, rather than a change in feel. [RBW] Re: Riv-ish, retro-grouch bike on eBay
I count seven 1000s on the 'bay at this moment - frame-sets and full bikes. I've never seen that before. Spring cleaning has begun in earnest! Marty On Apr 11, 11:28 am, Bill M. bmenn...@comcast.net wrote: I bought aMiyata1000 frameset in 1983, and still have it. It's been built up many different ways over the years, from loaded tourer to grocery getter to fixie. I rode my first 100 miler on that bike, rode it on fast training rides, towed my kids in a Burley trailer, and did a little overnight camping. It carries heavy loads easily, which it should given how stout it's built. IIRC the down tube is 1.2 mm / 1.0 mm/ 1.2 mm, the frame and fork together weigh around 7.5 lb. There's lots of clearance for wide tires. The current build has a Suntour XC Pro seat post and XC pro canti's, both bought NOS on e-bay, Suntour XCD derailleurs , Silver bar-end shifters, a Sugino AT crank, 36 spoke Mavic sealed freewheel hubs with narrow v-section rims (Velocity Aerohead in back, an old Ambrosio in front), 35 mm Vittoria Randonneur Pros, a Nitto Randonneur bar and Technomic stem, a Brooks Champion Flyer and a Carradice Nelson Longflap. The 1000 is a nice bike but lacks some of the refinements of more recent, well designed tourers. The BB height is around 11 inches, much higher than necessary. That reduces standover height enough that one might have to ride a smaller size. That and lack of any head tube extension mean I have to run the Technomic near full extension to get the bars up where I need them. The bridge placements make it hard to achieve a good rear fender line, and there are no threaded fender mounts as we have come to expect these days. The cable guides are above the BB, which increases friction over the plastic under-BB guides and (IMO) contributes to ghost shifting. There are neither DT shifter bosses, nor brazed on cable stops, so either clamp on shifters or a clamp on stop are needed. The Campy clamp-on stop I use may be the one part that's been on the bike since the beginning! The seat post is 26.8, which made finding a nice one a little more difficult. The decals were stick-ons, not clear coated, so they tend to fray around the edges. I removed all of them from mine save the one on the head tube. There's no kickstand plate. Still, if you can get a good fit, the 1000 is a very capable loaded tourer and barring catastrophic accidents it should live approximately forever. I doubt I'll sell mine as long as I can still ride a bicycle. Bill On Apr 10, 1:21 pm, William tapebu...@gmail.com wrote: I still regret not buying the 1988Miyata1000. That bike was spectacular. [RBW] Re: [BOB] Commuting makes me angry...(might be a little ranty!)
Yes, I find that close encounters with aliens, aka motorists, leave me feeling blue and anxious and sad. But I consider that you have (or, at least, I have) similar close encounters when I drive, so that tends to put things back into perspective, along with the statistics that cycling is really not that dangerous. It comes down to the inevitable, though not necessary (in the ontological sense), existence of error, evil, conflict, part of life. But -- this is important! -- I don't believe it is always worse for cycling than for life generally. I wonder. Hilsen is different, indeed. Rob - Oh, I'm just thinking out loud. I think the Ram/Rom shines with 27/28mm tires. The fact that they can run 35s or 37s makes them great for dirt, too. I'm tempted by the black one, big time. That was the one we stocked at the Miyata shop. [RBW] Re: Paul Racer M's on my Rambouillet
Don't be confused. It's not that complicated. If you run a taller straddle, it takes less brake lever travel to get the brake pads to hit the rim. So to get the same travel on your hand, you run the brake pads father away from the rim. More rim clearance. If you run a shorter straddle, the brake lever feel at your hand is spongier. To avoid feeling like you are squishing the brake lever all the way to the bars, you run your brakes tight, and you don't have as much rim clearance. Honjos save the day! Looks like the derailer would be beyond hope, but I dunnow, try straightening it out and see... might get lucky but probably not.
